WHAC PREVIEW: Men's Basketball set for battle against Lourdes

(Ann Arbor, MI) - The Concordia Cardinals men's basketball team is preparing for an appearance in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Tournament on Thursday evening. The Cardinals earned the seven-seed in the tournament with an 8-12 record in WHAC play.

ABOUT THE GRAY WOLVES

The fourth-year Head Coach in Dennis Hopson led the team to the second seed in the tournament with a 15-5 WHAC record and 21-7 overall. Lourdes was on a seven-game winning streak before falling in their regular season finale against Indiana Tech. 

 

Four players on the offensive end pace the Gray Wolves in double digit-scoring as Jackie Harris, Joey Holyfield, Little Anderson, and Clif Snow average 17.0, 17.0, 14.1, and 10.1 points respectively. Holifield leads the team in assists per game at 2.9. 

 

The leading rebounds on the team were Harris at 7.2 and Snow at 6.8. Holifield and Snow both lead the team in steals at 1.6 and 1.1, while Marcus Larsson leads the team in blocks per game at 0.9.

 


ABOUT THE CARDINALS

Head Coach Ricky Yahn is in his 10th season at the helm of the Cardinals. The team has accumulated a 9-19 overall season record while maintaining an 8-12 WHAC record. The Cardinals dropped their final three games of the season. Concordia will be making their first appearance in the tournament since the 2020-21 season. 

 

Leading the offensive charge for CUAA are Kip French and Matt Lockhart who average 12.1 points a game and 10.6 a game. French also leads the team in assists at 4.2 a game. 

 

Three Cardinals led the rebounding efforts on the team with Lockhart, Zac Clark, and Devyn Jones at 6.5, 5.3, and 4.1 respectively a game. French, Lockhart, and Jones all average over 1 steal a game, while Colton Ritsema averages 0.7 blocks a game. 

 


IN CASE YOU MISSED IT (PREVIOUS MATCHUPS)

This season both teams have split the series, as the home team has taken each game. 

 

The first matchup of the season was all the way back on November 9, when the Cardinals came away with a 60-41 win at home. The Cardinals would see a balanced attack in the game as four scorers would hit the double-digit mark in scoring. Matt Lockhart and Zackary Johnson both led the team with 12 points and Zac Clark and Jayden Priddy both had 11. Jackie Harris was the sole double-digit scorer for Lourdes with 15. 

 

The February 1st matchup of these teams saw Lourdes pull out the 84-59 win. Zackary Johnson and Jason Jergens both led the Cardinals at 10 points apiece, while four of the five Gray Wolves starters score at least 10 points. 

 

The all-time series has the Gray Wolves with a 17-10 record overall, with Lourdes winning eight of the last nine games.
