Men's Basketball falls in tight contest with rival Siena Heights

(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia men's basketball played host to rival Siena Heights on Saturday afternoon to close out the regular season.  The Cardinals honored their five senior team members prior to the game: Colton Ritsema, Erik Mroczek, Henry Knapp, Kip French, and Matt Lockhart.  CUAA controlled the pace for most of the game, but SHU pulled away in the final minute for a 69-64 win. 

Colton Ritsema led the team with 15 points.  Zac Clark was second with 14 points.  Matt Lockhart had a team-high 9 rebounds along with 8 points. 

 

Matt Lockhart opened scoring with a layup.  SHU countered with an 8-0 run, but Kip French and Zac Clark scored baskets to keep pace.  Jayden Priddy drove for a layup and hit a triple and Nate Brighton scored inside.  Kip French made a 3-pointer to tie the game 16-16 with 9:38 left. 

Matt Lockhart made a go-ahead layup and Zac Clark scored 7 straight points for a 26-19 lead.  Kip French, Colton Ritsema, and Devyn Jones all recorded baskets down the stretch and CUAA led 32-26 at halftime. 

 

Colton Ritsema scored 7 points to open the second half for a 39-29 lead.  Zackary Johnson and Ritsema added layups, but the Saints began to pull closer.  Matt Lockhart added a basket and two free throws and CUAA led 47-45 at the midway point. 

Zackary Johnson made 3 free throws after being fouled on a triple.  Zac Clark and Colton Ritsema both scored inside, but SHU tied the game 54-54 with 6:36 to play.  Clark and Ritsema scored again to regain the lead.  Jayden Priddy and Kip French combined to give CUAA a 64-58 lead with 3:16 left. 

SHU slowly came back and retook the lead with 52 seconds left in the game.  The Cardinals were unable to convert on offense and fell 69-64 as time expired. 

 

Concordia will now await their opponent in the WHAC conference tournament.
