Cardinals win first game of season at CIVT

(Chicago, IL) – Concordia University Ann Arbor traveled to Chicago this weekend for the Concordia Invitational Volleyball Tournament (CIVT) which featured Concordia University Chicago and Concordia University Wisconsin along with CUAA. The Cardinals earned their first win of the season against Concordia University Chicago (CUC) and lost to Concordia University Wisconsin (CUW) to split the 2019 version of the annual tournament.

CUAA – 3 vs CUC – 1

  • Seniors Delaney Bennett and Lena Thompson combined for 12 kills in the back and forth first set against the Cougars with 7 and 5 respectively.
  • In the second set, the Cardinals bounced back from 7 point deficit to win behind a pair of aces from Gabrielle den Boer and a set winning ace by Hailey McCourt.
  • The third set started well for the Cards, as they saw an early 5-0 lead with Bennett serving. The Cardinal lead evaporated as the Cougars surged back to win the set by a 7 point advantage.
  • Both sides remained close at first in set number four, but after a 9-9 tie Gabrielle den Boer led a 12-0 rally from the service line where she recorded another 4 aces and Concordia ultimately won 25-12.

CUAA – 0 vs CUW – 3

  • After a 12-2 start in favor of the Falcons, CUAA pushed back with 6-1 run that fell short as CUW went on to win the first set, 25-13.
  • The second set was more back and forth with both teams struggling offensively and committing errors. CUW pulled away after a 18-18 tie, only allowing one point afterwards.
  • Ann Arbor broke out to an 8 point lead in the third set with the help of two aces from Destiny Moore. The Cardinals maintained the lead until CUW tied it at 22 and eventually won 25-23.

The Cardinals return to action on Wednesday, September 4th against Defiance College. The match will be at 7:00 PM in the Cardinal Field House.
