Warriors defeat Cardinals in straight sets

(Ann Arbor, MI) The volleyball team hosted the Warriors of Indiana Tech on Wednesday afternoon in a WHAC matchup. The Warriors (13-5, 4-3) looked to get back to their winning ways after a heart-breaking defeat to Madonna last Saturday. The Cardinals entered the matching looking to snap a five game slide. The Warriors came and strong and controlled the Cardinals from the start to take the three game sweep (25-11, 25-19, 25-17).

Gabrielle den Boer and Delaney Bennett (SR/Fruitport, MI) led the Cardinals attack with 7 kills each. Kaitlin Veihl (JR/Muskegon, MI) recorded 21 assist for the Cardinals. Tara Schatzle and Delaney Bennett were the only Cardinals to record double digit digs with 12 and 13 respectively.

1st Set – CUAA 11, Indiana Tech 25

Both teams played evenly to start but the fierce attack from the Warriors allowed them to start to pull away leading by as much as 20-9. The Warriors seemed to be all over the court and did not let the Cardinal offense get into a rhythm. Delaney Bennett (SR/Fruitport, MI) led the Cardinals with 2 kills and the Cardinals had 11 total digs in the 1st set.

2nd Set – CUAA 19, Indiana Tech 25

The Cardinals energy level increased the second set and came out strong. The second set was once again a back and forth affair, with neither team giving the other an inch. The Warriors capitalized after every Cardinal error and that gained them the edge in the last stretch of the set. The Warriors managed to squeeze a victory of a score of 25-19. Tara Schatzle (JR/Brooklyn, MI) led the Cardinal in digs with 10 and Gabrielle den Boer (JR/Canton, MI) and Delaney Bennett (SR/Fruitport, MI) had a combined 9 kills for the Cardinal attack.

3rd Set – CUAA 17, Indiana Tech 25

The Warriors did not let up in the third despite the Cardinals efforts to force a fourth set. A Cardinals timeout at 15-10 did not slow the Warriors as they recorded a kill the next point. Consecutive points for the Cardinals to make it 19-15 showed signs up a potential comeback but the Warriors would eventually pull away. Two attacking errors by the Cardinals played into the Warriors hands giving them a 25-17 set and match.

The Cardinals will quickly return to action on Friday evening at 5pm as they host the University of Michigan Dearborn Wolverines at the Cardinal Fieldhouse.
