Volleyball drops road matchup to Lourdes

(Southfield, MI) – Concordia volleyball team continued their weekend WHAC double header an in another road match. The Cardinals traveled across the south border to Sylvania for a matchup against Lourdes. Both teams entered the contest with an even .500 marking and looked to get in the winning column. The Gray Wolves defended their home court to defeat the Cardinals in straight sets, 25-14, 25-18, 25-17.

Gabrielle den Boer (JR/Canton, MI) and Lena Thompson (SR/Howard City, MI) paced the Cardinals offense with 9 and 7 kills respectively. Kaitlin Veihl (JR/Muskegon, MI) paced the Cardinals with 12 assists and 10 digs. Tara Schatzle (JR/Brooklyn, MI) led the Cardinals with 15 assists in her backrow duties.

Set 1 – Lourdes 25, CUAA 14

The Cardinals jumped out to a quick start scoring the first three points of the game. Consecutive kills by Lena Thompson increased the Cardinals lead 10-6. Lourdes woke up and eventually found their rhythm scoring 11 straight points to take the lead 10-17. The Gray Wolves controlled the rest of the first set to eventually take the first one 25-14.

Set 2 – Lourdes 25, CUAA 18

Lourdes kept their rhythm going into the second set taking advantage of Cardinals errors to an early 4-9 lead. Consecutive kills by den Boer and Lena Thompson as well as back to back errors by the Gray Wolves allowed the Cardinals to claw back to within three points, 12-15. The Gray Wolves responded with four quick points to force a Concordia timeout at 12-19. The Gray Wolves continued to cruise after the timeout to take the second set, 18-25.

Set 3 – Lourdes 25, CUAA 17

The Cardinals came out strong in the third set determined to play a fourth set. Lena Thompson led the Cardinals early with successful attacks to make the score 5-4. Lourdes took advantage of Cardinals attacking errors to regain the lead 8-10. Lourdes increased their lead to 12-16 forcing a Cardinals timeout. Lourdes could not be slowed at that point, and eventually increased their lead to 14-22. A Lourdes service error and a kill by Den Boer gave the Cardinals 17 points before a kill by Lourdes finished the game 17-25

After a two game road stretch, the Cardinals will return to the Fieldhouse for a matchup against Aquinas College. The WHAC game will take place on Wednesday, September 25 with a start time set or 7pm. Aquinas currently holds a 4-7 mark overall and 1-1 in the WHAC. The Saints play at University of Northwestern Ohio on Sunday afternoon.
