Esports Weekly Update (March 1st - March 7th)

The Smash Ultimate team wrapped up their season in the Tech Chase Major League, taking a loss to Oakland University. While the finish wasn't what the team was hoping for, the team made tremendous progress over the year. In the pre-season, the Cardinals were nowhere near the conversation for league contenders. And after a slow start in the first couple weeks of the league due to having to play shorthanded, the team became the talk of the league, defeating every team at least once (with the exception of undefeated and eventual league champion Michigan State). To go from a perceived bottom tier team to defeating the top teams in the league was a huge mark of progress and a testament to the hard work that the players and coach, Kevandre Thompson, put in every single week. The team will continue to work through the spring and play in solo Michigan Power Ranking tournaments.

Additionally, team captain Zach "Yoderlahehoo" Yoder is working on creating a high school Smash league. More information to be released in a few days...

The Call of Duty team has reached the midpoint of their season and has a bye this upcoming week. They return to action on 3/16 with matches against Bowling Green University and Shawnee State University at 8:00pm and 9:30pm, respectively.

Fortnite began their solo and trio competition in PlayVS this past week. Zach "zburk24" Burk peaked in solos with a fourth place finish. After a final team assembly so close to the start of the season, the trio team of Burk, Jack "Jfro" Melton, and Nick "FazeGurr11" Althouse are quickly finding some chemistry. They continue their solo and trio campaigns on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.

Our Madden solo players both got off to great starts in their PlayVS season. Austin "Poeman21" Poe stumbled a bit in game one against Barton College, but then he made some very effective adjustments and won the next two, taking the series 2-1, and earning the first Madden win in Concordia University Ann Arbor Esports history. Andrew "Babyroo31" Foerster had to delay his start of the season until a few days later due to a reschedule, but that delay had no effect on the match as Foerster defeated Navarro College in two straight games. Their opponents for the upcoming week will be revealed closer to gameday.

Overwatch lost their first match of the PlayVS season by a score of 3-0 to Keiser University Sarasota. They will look to turn things around on Monday, March 8th at 7:00pm against Culver-Stockton College.

We are still looking for the next great recruit for all of our teams in addition to students interested in stream broadcasting and/or community/social media management. If you are interested, contact the Director of Esports, Dominic Scala, at dominic.scala@cuaa.edu.
