Weekly Esports Update (March 25th - March 21st)

The Concordia Esports program made local news as it was the highest earning collegiate team for Extra Life Detroit this past year, specifically benefitting Beaumont Children's Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan. The team's name will be added to a new plaque that will be "[...] displayed in the Children's Miracle Network Garden's Teen Area, where kids enjoy playing video games, PC games and tabletop games." More information and a picture of the plaque can be found at the Beaumont Children's Miracle Network site

Our Overwatch team continues to learn and improve, taking another 3-0 loss this past week to Stockton University and will play again on March 22nd against Albright College.

The Call of Duty team was able to take some rounds in search and destroy this week but still fell 3-0 to both Bowling Green State University and Shawnee State University. The team will wrap up play this coming week with a single match against the University of Cincinnati.

In Fortnite solos, Zach Burk has continued his strong play as he finished 155th overall out of over 1200 players. Jack Melton also got his game trending in the right direction after finding a more reliable and consistent landing point, helping him finish at 295th. In trios, Glenn Rose, the program's swiss army knife (Call of Duty captain; Rocket League, Valorant, and Overwatch sub), joined Burk and Melton to help the team earn a 133rd place finish with a total score of almost 100 points higher than their average of the previous two weeks.

Our Madden solo players ran into a tough week, with both Poe and Foerster taking their first losses of the season to Texas Southern University and Lakeland University, respectively.

For PlayVS Rocket League this semester, the esports program will be fielding two teams as well as relying on a handful of additional players to substitute onto both of those rosters. This week's CUAA Black roster featured Cloe Smith, Lizzy Knappenberger, and Thomas Hendry. Unfortunately, the team took two tough losses to DePaul University and Grand Valley State, but as the night went on, there was already improvement being seen as they made some adjustments to their defense to limit aerial goals against. CUAA Red's roster was composed of team captain Noah Pastrana, Brendan Troyer, and Mike Brannan. Their first match ended in a close loss to Roger Williams University in which Concordia just couldn't find the back of the net despite taking numerous high quality shots in each game. They carried that steady play in the next match against Rutgers University and earned the win in a deciding game 5 finale. Both teams will continue with their second week of play on March 25th.

We are still looking for the next great recruit for all of our teams in addition to students interested in stream broadcasting and/or community/social media management. If you are interested, contact the Director of Esports, Dominic Scala, at dominic.scala@cuaa.edu.
