Football falls at Saint Francis (IN)

(Fort Wayne, IN) – Concordia football traveled to Saint Francis on Saturday afternoon to continue MSFA conference play. The Cardinals were unable to overcome a 20-3 first-half deficit and fell by a final score of 34-24.

 

Brad Sollom threw for 143 yards and 2 touchdowns. Gavin Brooks also passed for 99 yards. Brandon Stewart led the rushing attack with 52 yards. Bailey Brooks topped receivers with 70 yards while Seeger DeGayner and Nicholas Patton added a touchdown apiece.

On defense, Liam Karry led the team with 12 tackles. Casey Rauch came in second with 9 tackles. David Cagle and Gabe Whitmore tied for third with 7 tackles each.

 

Concordia kicked off to Saint Francis to begin the game. The Cougars used a 17-play, 75-yard drive to score while taking 7:10 off the clock. While the Cardinals stalled early on offense, the defense held Saint Francis to two field goals for a 13-0 deficit.

Saint Francis added another touchdown late in the second quarter. The Cardinals were able to start in Cougar territory after Seeger DeGayner broke a 53-yard kickoff return. The drive ended with Caiden Thomas kicking a 33-yard field goal, cutting the deficit to 20-3 at halftime.

 

Concordia scored on a 9-play, 74-yard drive in the third quarter with Brad Sollom finding Nicholas Patton for a 34-yard strike. The Cougars answered with a touchdown drive and took a 27-10 lead after three quarters.

Gabe Whitmore broke a 62-yard kickoff return on the next series. Early in the fourth quarter, Brad Sollom capped a scoring drive by rushing in for a 3-yard touchdown to keep hope alive. Both teams continued to trade touchdowns with Brad Sollom finding Seeger DeGayner for a 31-yard strike.

The Cardinals attempted an onside kick after the touchdown, but Saint Francis was able to recover. The defense forced a stop to allow one more offensive series, but the Cougars held on for a 34-24 win.

 

Concordia will celebrate Senior Day next week when they host #3 Indiana Wesleyan at 1:00pm.
