(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia football hosted #3 Indiana Wesleyan on a sunny but chilly Saturday afternoon as the team celebrated Senior Day. The Cardinals came in looking for an upset and turned in a solid defensive performance for a 21-10 statement win.
Brad Sollom threw for 191 yards and a touchdown. Brandon Stewart led the rushing attack with 46 yards while matching James Carpenter with a TD apiece. Seeger DeGayner led receivers with 77 yards and a touchdown.
On defense, Casey Rauch led the team with 13 tackles. Liam Karry finished second with 10 tackles. Chase Maynard had an interception along with 8 tackles.
Concordia received the ball to begin the game. While IWU made a defensive stop, the Cardinals got the ball right back when Chase Mynard forced a fumble which was recovered by Marvitis Dupree. Both defenses traded stops but CUAA struck first with a 7-play, 87-yard scoring drive. A 61-yard reception by Bailey Brooks set up a 5-yard rushing touchdown from Brandon Stewart.
Concordia converted a 9-play, 89-yard drive just inside the second quarter. A 37-yard catch by Harmon DeVries put the team in the redzone and James Carpenter punched in a 3-yard rushing touchdown. The Cardinals held IWU to a field goal and made a key 4th-down stop after Casey Rauch hit the quarterback as he threw. CUAA led 14-3 at halftime.
Both defenses dominated the third quarter with no scoring from either team. The Wildcats were able to put a touchdown drive together early in the fourth quarter, trimming the lead to 14-10.
The Cardinals converted an 8-play, 66-yard scoring drive later in the quarter to put the game away. Brad Sollom scrambled for a 15-yard first down gain and then later found Seeger DeGayner for a 26-yard touchdown strike. Chase Maynard secured an interception in the final minute of play to clinch the victory.
Concordia will now await their postseason fate with the NAIA Selection Show tomorrow night at 6:00pm.
