WHAC announces men's lacrosse awards; Hunter McCarty named Newcomer of the Year

(Fort Wayne, Ind.) The Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) announced their season awards on Wednesday afternoon. Several Cardinals were honored for their success both on and off the court contributing to the team's most successful season in program history. Hunter McCarty highlighted the Cardinals honors being named WHAC Newcomer of the Year.

 

In addition to his Newcomer of the Year honor, McCarty also earned first team all-conference. Hunter McCarty quickly earned the respect of opposing teams during his freshman campaign. McCarty ranked among the top five in the WHAC for several statistical categories. He recorded 31 goals which led the team and ranked 5th in the WHAC. He also led the team in points with 50 which also ranked fifth in the WHAC. His 21 assists led the team which also ranked 4th in the league. He ranked third overall in points per game with 5 and recorded a team high 12 points on 7 goals and 5 assists in the win over Mount Vernon. Hunter was named the WHAC Offensive Player of the Week twice and also earned it once from the NAIA national office as well.

 

Senior captain Devin Wolever was placed on the second team. Wolever's versatility played an integral in the Cardinals success this season. Wolever posted a career best 30 goals and 12 assist during his senior campaign. He recorded a career high seven goals in the team's win over Mount Vernon on March 22nd. Wolever earned WHAC Player of the Week honors on April 7th which also led to NAIA Player of the Week honors as well. That was the first time in his career that Wolever was named the player of the week at the WHAC and NAIA level. Wolever recently became the first Cardinal in program history to record 100 goals. 

 

Reggie Thompson joined Wolever on the second team. The senior midfielder posted career numbers during his senior campaign. Thompson led the team with 40 ground balls and caused 10 turnovers. He won 63% of the faceoffs as he went 21-33 on the season. Thompson's physical style of play contributed to the Cardinals success this season.

 

The WHAC honors athletes through the All-Academic team for those student-athletes of junior academic status having atleast a 3.25 cumulative GPA. Qualifying for the Cardinals this season were Ryan Illes, Miles Riddell, Collin Webb, and Devin Wolever.

 

The WHAC prioritizes the NAIA's core values of respect, integrity, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership. In celebration of these core values the WHAC honors representatives from each sport that epitomize these core values and their respective institutions. Luke Hovarter was named Concordia's recipient of the Champions of Character.
