Men's basketball resumes competition with loss to Spring Arbor

(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia men's basketball returned to action for the first time in almost three months with a home game against Spring Arbor on Wednesday night.  The Cardinals came in looking for their first win of the year while the Cougars entered 4-5.  CUAA made a run in the 2nd half, but the team could not escape an early deficit and fell 82-48.

 

Thomas Hronis led Concordia with 13 points in the game, going 3-8 from behind the arc.  Zackary Johnson finished with 11 points in the match, shooting 3-6 from three point range.  Anthony Condie had a team-high 5 rebounds along with 4 points.

 

After falling behind 7-0, Bernard Kasanda put the Cardinals on the board with a free throw.  Spring Arbor responded with a 14-0 run until Thomas Hronis drilled a 3-pointer.  Kip French and Zac Clark added baskets for the Cardinals, but the Cougars continued to extend their lead as well.  Anthony Condie scored on an offensive putback and Nate Brighton notched a layup, but CUAA trailed 43-14 at halftime.

 

Thomas Hronis knocked down a midrange jumper for the first Concordia basket in the 2nd half.  The Cardinals' offense began to heat up as Thomas Hronis and Zackary Johnson combined for 5 triples in a 3-minute stretch, trimming the deficit to 55-33 at the 12:29 mark.

 

Colton Ritsema and Bernard Kasanda knocked down jumpers, but Spring Arbor continued to maintain their advantage.  Devin Jones got on the scoresheet and Nate Brighton made 3 free throws down the stretch.  However, the Cougars emerged with the 82-48 win as time expired.

 

Concordia will have a short turnaround as they will host Greenville University on Friday, January 22.  Tip-off is at 5pm.
