Cardinals use strong second half to defeat LTU 85-71

(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia men's basketball played host to Lawrence Tech on Saturday afternoon.  Both teams entered the game with identical 2-4 WHAC conference records.  CUAA overcame a first-half deficit and pulled away in the 2nd half for an 85-71 win.

 

Thomas Hronis led Concordia with 22 points.  Matt Lockhart finished second with 13 points and a team-high 8 rebounds.  Devyn Jones and Jordan Winowiecki finished third with 12 points apiece.  Bernard Kasanda was in double figures with 10 points.

 

Devyn Jones scored an inside basket to get Concordia on the board.  Thomas Hronis drilled an early 3-pointer, but Lawrence Tech jumped out to a 12-5 lead.  Matt Lockhart converted an old-fashioned three-point play and Zackary Johnson hit a triple that bounced on the rim and rolled in.

 

Concordia pulled ahead 21-19 after a 3-pointer from Jordan Winowiecki.  The lead continued to change hands with Matt Lockhart knocking down a triple, but the Blue Devils built a 41-30 lead with 3:19 to play.  Colton Ritsema and Thomas Hronis made late triples and CUAA trailed 45-36 at halftime.

 

Devyn Jones spun for a basket to start the 2nd half.  The Cardinals slowly chipped away at the deficit with back-to-back triples from Jordan WinowieckiMatt Lockhart tied the game 61-61 with a 3-pointer and a quick spin and drive from Bernard Kasanda put Concordia ahead.

 

The Cardinals used an impressive 15-0 run to take a commanding 80-63 lead with 3:33 remaining.  Thomas Hronis made a 3-pointer and a jumper in the run and Tyler Black chipped in a pair of layups.  Concordia's defense was able to secure the 85-71 win as time expired.

 

Concordia will play again tomorrow when they host Aquinas at 3pm.
