Lourdes pulls away in second half to defeat Cardinals 82-62

(Sylvania, OH) – Concordia men's basketball played their second game of the weekend with a road match at Lourdes.  The Cardinals came in 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the WHAC while the Gray Wolves entered 5-2 and 3-0 in WHAC play.  The first half was closely contested, but Lourdes pulled away in the second half to claim an 82-62 win.

 

Zackary Johnson led the Cardinals with 19 points.  Colton Ritsema was also in double figures with 11 points.  Devyn Jones had a team-high 7 rebounds along with 8 points.

 

A three  from Zackary Johnson tied the game 3-3 early on.  Both teams traded early baskets with points in the paint from Colton Ritsema and Johnson, and a triple from Ritsema put Concordia up 10-8.  The lead continued to change hands as Bernard Kasanda drove for a layup and Devyn Jones used a spin move to score.

 

Anthony Condie converted in the paint and a Devyn Jones layup put the Cardinals ahead 23-22 at the 6:57 mark.  Colton Ritsema drained a high-arcing triple, but Lourdes battled back to tie the game 28-28.  Zackary Johnson knocked down a pair of deep triples late, but Lourdes led 35-34 at halftime.

 

Colton Ritsema opened the half with a another triple to give the Cardinals the lead.  Bernard Kasanda drove for a pair of quick layups to keep Concordia in front, but Lourdes surged ahead to take a 55-44 lead with 14:23 to go

Devyn Jones ended the run with an offensive putback and a Johnson triple pulled the team within 6 points.  Johnson continued to battle with a layup and a free throw, but another 10-0 Gray Wolves run led to a 70-52 deficit at the 8:16 mark.

 

Lourdes continued to maintain their lead throughout the remainder of the half. The Cardinals struggled to mount a comeback and eventually fell, 82-62.

 

Concordia will play their next game on February 3 at Rochester.  Tip-off is set for 7:30pm.
