Men's basketball holds on for a thrilling 66-65 win in WHAC opener

(Lima, OH) – The Concordia men's basketball team began WHAC play with a road game at UNOH on Wednesday night.  The Cardinals entered 2-3 overall while the Racers entered 0-5.  The game featured multiple lead changes, but CUAA overcame a first half deficit and held on in the final minute to secure a 66-65 win.

 

Devyn Jones led the team with his first career double double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.  Bernard Kasanda was in double figures with 10 points.  Matt Lockhart and Thomas Hronis recorded 9 points apiece.

 

A triple from Thomas Hronis gave Concordia their first basket.  Bernard Kasanda made a jumper and Zackary Johnson hit a three pointer as a closely contested first half continued.  After falling behind 17-10, the Cardinals used a 10-3 run to knot the score 20-20 with Devyn Jones scoring the tying free throws.

 

UNOH answered with an 11-0 run until Thomas Hronis knocked down his second triple.  Colton Ritsema scored on an offensive putback and added a layup as the Cardinals hung around.  Matt Lockhart drained a late stepback triple, but CUAA trailed 42-36 at halftime.

 

Free throws from Devyn Jones started a 7-0 Concordia run in the second to take the lead.  The lead continued to change hands multiple times in the next several minutes with Jones adding a 3-point basket and Tyler Black driving for a layup.  Thomas Hronis hit another triple to tie the game 55-55.

 

UNOH took a 64-59 lead with under 2 minutes to play, but a floater from Bernard Kasanda and a critical triple from Thomas Hronis tied the game.  Bernard Kasanda scored a go-ahead floater in the lane, but the Racers had multiple chances with late free throws to tie or take the lead.  A crucial block from Colton Ritsema in the final seconds helped to lock down the 66-65 win.

 

Concordia moves to 3-3 on the year with the victory.  The Cardinals return home on Saturday, January 30 to host rival Siena Heights.  Tip-off is at 3pm.
