Softball sweeps rival Siena Heights in doubleheader

(Adrian, MI) - Concordia softball traveled to rival Siena Heights on Sunday afternoon in WHAC play. The Cardinals earned an 8-3 win in game one and triggered the mercy rule in the 9-0 victory in game two.

 

GAME 1 – CUAA 8, SHU 3

Cassidy Kane pitched the first six innings in the first contest, notching 6 strikeouts. Siena Heights scored first in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead.

The Cardinals pulled ahead in the third starting with a 2-run homer from Payton Lewis. Sarah Tyrrell made it home on a wild pitch and Katie Tobias hit an RBI double to drive in Shannon McAlinden. The Saints countered with a solo home run in the bottom of the third.

Payton Lewis tacked on an RBI triple in the fourth to score Cassidy Kane. In the fifth, Maddy Grueter hit an RBI single to drive in Faith Cramton. Katie Tobias was able to reach home with Grueter caught in a rundown.

Cassidy Kane scored on a passed ball in the sixth inning. Kane and the Cardinal defense held Siena Heights to one run in the seventh to close out the 8-3 win.

Hannah Duchene pitched the final inning, and struck out one batter allowing two hits. 

 

GAME 2 – CUAA 9, SHU 0 (six innings)

Emilee Underwood started game two on the mound, going five innings with 7 strikeouts. The Cardinals opened scoring in the first when Payton Lewis scored on a Siena Heights error. Maddy Grueter added an RBI single to score Sarah Tyrrell.

In the second, Payton Lewis hit an RBI single to drive in Sarah McManus. Sarah Tyrrell then used an RBI single to score Lewis for a 4-0 lead.

Shannon McAlinden crushed a 3-run homer in the fourth to extend the lead. Faith Cramton tacked a 2-RBI double in the sixth to score Maddy Grueter and Megan Martin.

Paige Anderson pitched in the sixth inning, making 1 strikeout and securing the 9-0 victory based on the mercy rule.

 

Concordia will return home this Wednesday, April 10th, to host Lawrence Tech for a doubleheader starting at 3 pm.
