Softball splits series on Saturday with Golden Eagles

(Grand Rapids, MI) - The Concordia Cardinals softball team traveled to the west side of the state for their latest Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) matchup as this time they would take on the Cornerstone Golden Eagles. 

 

Concordia came into the match with an overall record of 24-10 and a 6-4 WHAC record. The Golden Eagles entered at 19-17 and 7-7 in WHAC play. 

 

GAME 1 - CORNERSTONE 10, CONCORDIA 6

The first game of the series saw Cassidy Kane take the mound for the Cardinals. Kane (3-2) pitched 5.2 innings, allowing nine hits, and nine runs, but would also strike out nine batters on the day.

 

The Golden Eagles got on the board first in the game on an RBI single. The game became tied when Katie Tobias stole second and Kane scored on an error. The tie didn't last long as four runs crossed the plate in the bottom of the third for CU. 

 

The top of the fourth saw the start of four straight CUAA runs as Kane singled home Amber Lamphier and Shannon McAlinden doubled home both Kane and Jada Stephenson. The sixth saw the final two Cardinal runs with a Payton Lewis lead-off home run and another McAlinden double to bring in Kane. 

 

Cornerstone put the game away in the bottom of the sixth, with five runs on a walk, a three-run triple, and a wild pitch. 

 

Hannah Duchene did not record an out, allowing one run on one hit. Paige Anderson got the final out for CUAA. 

 

GAME 2 - CONCORDIA 11, CORNERSTONE 5

Paige Anderson got the start in the circle for CUAA. Anderson (7-5) pitched 5.1 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts.

 

CUAA got on the board first in game 2, scoring in the top of the third on a Katie Tobias single which scored Shannon McAlinden and Cassidy Kane. That would be it for the scoring until the sixth inning when the two teams combined for a total of 14 runs. 

 

The Cardinal's third run came on a Maddy Grueter sacrifice bunt to score Tobias. Sarah Tyrell then singled, scoring Emmi Liptow. Elyse Brittain cleared the bases with a grand slam over the center field wall for a 8-0 lead. McAlinden brought in a run on a sac fly, before back-to-back singles from Bella Lee and Jada Stephenson rounded out the scoring for Concordia.

 

Cornerstone plated five runs in the bottom of the sixth on a trio of RBI hits and a groundout.

 

Emilee Underwood finished out the game with 1.2 innings, allowing two hits and struck out one batter. 

 

TOP PERFORMERS

Elyse Brittain (one at-bat) and Payton Lewis each grabbed a home run on the day. Cassidy Kane led the team with six hits as Bella Lee was one behind with five. Brittain and Shannon McAlinden each recorded four RBIs. 

 

Kane led the team on the pitching end with nine strikeouts. Emilee Underwood recorded an ERA of 0.00.

The Cardinals return home to face the Rochester Christian Warriors with a 1 PM first pitch.
