(Canton, MI) - Concordia women's hockey hosted Rhode Island on Saturday night for the second time looking for a weekend sweep. The Cardinals found themselves successful with a big 5-4 comeback win. Molly Burks totalled 24 saves while Grace Dodgson gave the Cardinals two huge goals. Seven Cardinals found themselves in the point column tonight, including Brooklyn Watkins, Sydney Orkisz, Emma Shore, Mallory Collins, Dodgson, Makayla Steinmetz, and Sara Kaczmarek.
The Cardinals opened up the scoring early with a goal from the blue line off the stick of Brooklyn Watkins as they looked to add to yesterday's theme of putting the pressure on early. A few minutes later an incredible pass from Grace Dodgson found Mallory Collins at mid ice, where she had no one to beat but the goalie, and she did just that to put the Cardinals up 2-0. They would hold that lead heading into the first intermission.
The second period started off with some strong defense on both sides. A coincidental roughing penalty resulted in 4-on-4 play, which Rhode Island took advantage of. Riley Bain was able to find the back of the net to limit the Cardinals' lead to one. A 5-on-3 for Rhode Island allowed them to knot the game up at two. Shortly after that, Grace Gibbons was able to find the net for the Rams to give them their first lead of the game and of the series.
That did not last long as the Cardinals took advantage of an early power play and Grace Dodgson was able to knot the game up at three a piece to begin the third period. Halfway through the period chaos at the net ensued as a puck from Chloe Monach snuck through to give the Rams back the lead. That did not last long as Grace Dodgson and Makayla Steinmetz combined for back to back goals in under a minute to shift momentum the Cardinals' way and put them up five to four. This lead would hold for the final eight minutes to secure the comeback and series sweep for Women's Hockey!
Concordia will be back in action next Friday at home at 8:00pm as they begin a series with the #8 ranked University of Michigan Wolverines!
