Women's soccer drops regular season finale to No. 18 Aquinas, 5-2

(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia women's soccer concluded their WHAC regular season by hosting the #18-ranked Aquinas Saints on Friday afternoon.  The Cardinals came in 5-4 overall (5-3 WHAC) while the Saints came in leading the WHAC with a 9-1 overall record and a perfect 7-0 conference slate.  The Cardinals hung with Aquinas by trading goals in the first half, but the Saints eventually pulled away for a 5-2 win.

Anna Roman started in goal for Concordia, recording 5 saves in the game.  Sierra Tischer took the first shot on goal for the Cardinals, but Aquinas struck first with a goal in the 9th minute.  CUAA countered with a corner kick opportunity off the foot of Kendra Lewis, but the Saints added another marker in the 12th minute.

Concordia broke the shutout in the 20th minute when Sophia Bell scored her first career goal as a Cardinal, capitalizing on a rebound in front of the net and jamming the ball in.  Aquinas scored again to go up 3-1, but Kendra Lewis cut the deficit in half in the 33rd minute.  Lewis was able to tap the ball in an open goal after a misplay by the Aquinas goalkeeper.  CUAA trailed 3-2 at halftime.

Aquinas scored in the 53rd minute to extend their lead back to two goals.  Concordia continued to work hard in the midfield and looked for an opportunity to move downfield.  Anna Roman stayed sharp in net, coming out of the goal to stop a breakaway with just over 20 minutes remaining.  However, the Saints were able to add one more goal in the 89th minute and secured the 5-2 win.

Concordia will now await their first round opponent in the WHAC conference tournament, beginning on Saturday, April 3.
