Cardinals downed by Golden Eagles in overtime, 3-2

(Grand Rapids, MI) – Concordia women's soccer faced off against Cornerstone on the road Saturday evening in WHAC conference play.  Both teams looked to claim their second victory of the year.  The Cardinals battled back from an early 1-0 deficit to take the lead, but the Golden Eagles were able to force overtime and secure a 3-2 win.

 

Anna Roman made 6 saves in net for the Cardinals.  The Golden Eagles struck first in the game, scoring in the 12th minute.  The Cardinals quickly counterattacked with Kendra Lewis creating several scoring chances, including a shot that rang off the post.

 

Concordia tied the game in the 18th minute.  Amay Ciszewski used a somersault throw-in to loft the ball over the Cornerstone defense and Samantha Golchuk headed the ball in from the left side.  Golchuk extended the team's lead in the 24th minute with a great individual effort, grabbing her own rebound off a deflected shot and sniping a shot in the right side.

 

Anna Roman made a critical diving save in the 29th minute to maintain her team's lead.  However, Cornerstone was able to tie the game with a goal in the 32nd minute.  The game remained tied 2-2 at halftime.

 

Kendra Lewis took a shot on net just 22 seconds into the 2nd half.  The game settled into a defensive battle as neither team was able to find the back of the net.  Anna Roman recorded 4 saves in the 2nd half as the Cardinals' defense held strong.  Isabel Stropich took a shot on net in the 82nd minute, but the game headed to overtime with the score tied 2-2.

 

Both teams exchanged defensive play to begin overtime, but the Golden Eagles' Laura Heider was able to break through in the 101st minute to secure the game-winning goal on a rebound for Cornerstone. 

 

Concordia will play their next game on the road at Siena Heights on Saturday, October 17.  The game is set to begin at 4pm.
