Women's Track team opens season at Bill Bippes; 4 school records fall

(Spring Arbor, MI) - The Women's Track and Field team started their season off very strong with 4 school records, 3 NCCAA qualifications, and 14 new collegiate marks.

 

The meet was highlighted by the throwers as they set four school records through four events.

 

Sophomore Lena Korte (Clinton, MI) continued her momentum from the indoor season by setting the shot put and javelin school records. Korte won the shot put with a distance of 12.46 meters. She finished in second place in the javelin with a throw of 34.74 meters. Korte also earned NCCAA qualifying marks for both of those events.

 

Sophomore Julia Hirt (Hartland, WI) won the discus with a distance of 41.95 meters while breaking the school record and earning an NCCAA qualifying mark. Freshman Elsa Clausen (Plainfield, IL) made her debut in the discus with a throw of 29.22 meters.

 

In the hammer, sophomore Quinn Stefanski (Munger, MI) broke the school record with a throw of 37.26 meters. That record stood for about 10 minutes until Morgan Jenkins (Cleveland, OH) just barely broke the school record with a throw of 37.69 meters. Jenkins earned a fifth-place finish in her collegiate hammer debut, while Stefanski earned a seventh-place finish.

 

Also competing in hammer were Clausen and Korte. Clausen earned a new collegiate mark with a distance of 36.07 meters and Korte got her third personal record of the meet with a throw of 35.83 meters.

 

Clausen and Jenkins made their outdoor shot put collegiate debuts with throws of 9.91 meters and 8.01 meters. Sophomore Hailey Stasiukinas (Wyoming, MI) also competed in the shot put and threw a distance of 8.36 meters.

 

Stasiukinas also competed in both javelin and long jump. Stasiukinas threw a distance of 26.86 meters, while she ended up jumping a distance of 3.91 meters.

 

The team also had a couple of other athletes compete in the long jump. Junior Lily Kueber (Northville, MI) returned to competition after suffering an injury indoors with a jump of 3.56 meters. Sophomore Aaliyah McIntosh (Chesterfield, MI) made her collegiate debut in the long jump with a distance of 3.23 meters.

 

In running events, senior Hope Renfer (Northville, MI) finished in third place with an almost one-second personal record improvement to 13.46 seconds. McIntosh also earned a new collegiate mark in the 100 with a time of 14.16 seconds.

 

In the 200-meter dash, graduate senior Emily Belinsky (Beluah, MI) finished in sixth place with a time of 28.03. Renfer also competed in the 200 and finished in a time of 28.55 seconds.

 

Belinsky also competed in the 400 and earned a personal record with a time of 1:03.55. Chloe Evans made her outdoor 400 collegiate debut with a time of 1:07.58.

 

Freshman Madisyn Flamini (Fowlerville, MI)  made her collegiate debut in 400 hurdles with a time of 1:23.16. Junior Mary Salem (Troy, MI)  made her outdoor collegiate debut in the 800 finishing in a time of 2:55.07.

 

Freshmen Amanda Fogo (Fowlerville, MI) and Alison Doerr (Grand Haven, MI) both made their collegiate debut in the 5k. Fogo finished at 22:30 and Doerr finished at 23:24.

 

The team will compete next on Saturday, April 8 at Oakland University for the Golden Grizzly Invite.
