Women's Track & Field finishes the WHAC Championships in 6th place

(Adrian, MI) - The Women's Track and Field team finished the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Championships in 6th place after putting up 38 points at the 2-day event.

The highlight of the first day came from sophomore Lena Korte (Clinton, MI) who won Javelin with a throw of 37.16 meters. Korte not only became the WHAC champion with the throw, but she also earned a new personal best and rebroke her own school record. Korte was named to the WHAC All-Conference First Team with the win.

The three other points came from distance events, as the 4x800 meter relay team of Amanda Fogo (Freshman; Fowlerville, MI), Alison Doerr (Freshman; Grand Haven, MI), Mary Salem (Junior; Troy, MI), and Chloe Gunter (Sophomore; Monroe, MI) earned a 7th-place finish with a total time of 11:04, which earned the team another 2 points.

Fogo then turned around two hours later and made her collegiate debut in the 10k, where she finished in 8th place with a time of 46:04 and earn the final point for day number one.

Even though they did not earn points, the Cardinals still had many other performances during day one, including Hope Renfer (Senior; Northville, MI) running an NCCAA qualifying time in the 100 dash with a time of 13.20 seconds and finishing in 13th place.

Senior Emily Belinsky (Beulah, MI)  competed in the 100 hurdles, where she finished with a time of 16.73 seconds.

Korte along with Morgan Jenkins (Freshman; Cleveland, OH), Quinn Stefanski (Sophomore; Munger, MI), and Elsa Clausen (Freshman; Plainfield, IL) also competed in Hammer throw. Jenkins led the group with a 14th-place finish after a throw of 38.51 meters. Korte finished right behind in 15th place with a throw of 38.49 meters. Stefanski was not too far behind, as she finished in 18th place with a throw of 36.77 meters and Clausen finished in 25th place with a throw of 33.41 meters.

To wrap up day one, Aaliyah McIntosh (Sophomore; Chesterfield, MI) competed in Long Jump, finishing in 19th place with a jump of 3.98 meters.

The second day was kicked off again by throwing events, where Korte earned her second championship of the weekend in the shot put. Korte won the event by throwing a new personal record and a new school record distance of 13.89 meters. Also competing in the shot put was Stefanski with a distance of 10.40 meters and Clausen with 9.69 meters.

To finish up throwing events for the meet, sophomore Julia Hirt finished in second place in the discus with a throw of 41.85 meters. Hirt would make it on the Second Team All-Conference list with her second-place finish. Clausen also competed and fished with a throw of 29.00 meters and was in 19th place.

It was a big second day on the track for Belinsky, who ran a new personal record in the 400-meter hurdles and earned a 9th-place finish with a time of 1:09.32. She also helped power the 4x100 relay team to a 7th-place finish with a time of 52.70 meters. The relay team also included: Renfer, Lily Kueber (Junior; Northville, MI), and Chloe Evans (Freshman; New Boston, MI).

Belinsky, Evans, and Renfer joined with Gunter to make up the 4x400 meter relay team, which finished in 7th place as well, with a finishing time of 4:23.85.

Evans's third event of the day was the open 400, where she ran a time of 1:07.45.

Freshman Madisyn Flamini (Fowlerville, MI) fought her way through the 3k steeplechase race to finish in 6th place and earn 3 points for the team with a finishing time of 17:26.14.

Doerr returned to compete in the 5k and battled to finish in a time of 24:13.

 

WHAC HONORS

Hope Renfer was recognized as the team's WHAC Champion of Character. The sophomore was honored for his commitment to the five core values of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership.

The WHAC announced their All-Academic teams, which involve being a junior in Academic standing and having a cumulative GPA of 3.25. Five Cardinals were named to the team which included Alyvia Hock, Emily Belinsky, Lydia Schroeder, Megan Espinoza, and Sierra Stechebar

 

UP NEXT

The team ended up in 6th place with a total of 38 points, finishing 42.5 points behind Madonna and 8 points ahead of Rochester. Some of the team will be back in action at the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Championship Meet hosted by Columbia International University in Columbia, South Carolina on May 10 – 12.
