Men's soccer defeats Rochester 1-0 in season opener

 

(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia men's soccer held their home opener on Saturday afternoon when they hosted Rochester to begin WHAC conference play.  The Cardinals came into the game looking for their first win while the Warriors were playing in their first game of the season.  After a scoreless first half, Brett Kuhlman's goal in the 56th minute held up as the game-winner in a 1-0 win.

 

Ryan Webb started again between the pipes for Concordia, notching 5 saves in the game.  The Cardinals threatened early in the game with three corner kicks off the foot of Boris IllicBrett Kuhlman took the first shot on net for CUAA with Brody Smith adding one as well in the 3rd minute. 

 

The team's best opportunity in the 1st half came in the 39th minute when Boris Illic was awarded a penalty kick, but the Rochester goalkeeper was able to touch the ball away to make the save.  Ryan Webb was tested in the final minutes of the 1st half and the score remained 0-0 at halftime.

 

The Cardinals broke the tie in the 56th minute of the 2nd half.  Austin Corona moved in from the left side side of the net and passed to Brett Kuhlman who slipped a ball in the left side of the goal, putting CUAA ahead 1-0.

 

Ryan Webb had to remain sharp in net, making 4 of his 5 saves in the 2nd half.  The Concordia defense was able to weather the Rochester attack and hold on to secure the 1-0 victory.

 

Concordia improves their record to 1-1 on the year.  The Cardinals will play their next game on Saturday, October 10 (4:30pm) when the team travels to Cornerstone
