(Grand Rapids, MI) – Concordia men's soccer traveled to Grand Rapids on Saturday afternoon to compete against Cornerstone in WHAC conference play. The Cardinals came into the game 1-1 overall while the Golden Eagles entered 0-1. CUAA created many solid scoring chances, but Cornerstone emerged with a 5-0 win.
Ryan Webb started in net for Concordia, making 5 saves. Both teams traded chances early with Alexander Valencia sailing a shot high for the Cardinals. Cornerstone struck first in the game with a goal in the 16th minute. Concordia attempted to respond as Boris Illic took a powerful shot off the hands of the goalkeeper. Tanguy Flachez took a free kick and rang a shot off the post.
After the Cardinals nearly capitalized on a corner kick opportunity, Cornerstone counterattacked and scored again in the 38th minute. Concordia had a few chances in the last minutes but the team trailed 2-0 at halftime.
The Cardinals weathered several more Cornerstone chances early in the 2nd half. Concordia's best opportunity came when Christian Margilaj sent a header just wide of the net off a free kick. However, the Golden Eagles eventually found their offense and added 3 more goals in the half. CUAA fell by a final score of 5-0.
The Cardinals only mustered one shot on goal compared to Cornerstone's 10. The Golden Eagles outshot the Cardinals 18-7 as well.
Concordia will play their next game against rival Siena Heights on Wednesday, October 14. The game is set to kick off at 7pm.
