Cardinals take one of three against Roosevelt

(Rosemont, IL) The Cardinal Softball program took the field for their second weekend of the season against the Lakers of Roosevelt University. Concordia played three close games with the Lakers, winning the first and dropping the second two by one run each.

 

Game 1 | 12:00 PM

Concordia 4 - Roosevelt 2

  • Lauren Reichel pitched a complete game for the Cards, tallying 10 strikeouts and only allowing 5 baserunners. The Lakers were only able to get to Reichel in the first inning when Aisley Njissang hit a ground rule double, scoring Roosevelt's only runs of the game.
  • Jada Stephenson was Concordia's first run when she stole home in the top of the third.
  • It was Sarah Tyrrell who gave the Cardinals the lead in the fifth when her single brought home Reichel and Flesia Borck.
  • Karley Kent gave the Cards an insurance run with a home run to left field in the seventh inning.

 

Game 2 | 2:00 PM

Concordia 4 - Roosevelt 5 (9 innings)

  • Concordia got off to an early lead thanks to a Shannon McAlinden triple and Sarah Tyrrell single which scored Carly Pearson and Karley Kent respectively.
  • Two more runs were tacked on in the later innings after the Laker catcher committed a throwing error on Emma Paryaski's bunt scoring McAlinden and Carly Pearson hit a sacrifice fly to plate Abbie Begley.
  • Maddie Cieczka kept the Lakers at bay for most of the game outside of a lone run allowed in the second. In the bottom of the seventh, the Lakers brought the game within two after a pair of throwing errors by the Cardinals.
  • Kate Elias came in to relieve Cieczka and allowed the Lakers to tie the game up off of two wild pitches. The Lakers were able to seal the deal, walking off the game with a bunt in the bottom of the ninth inning.

 

Game 3 | 4:00 PM

Concordia 1 - Roosevelt 2

  • Cassidy Kane toed the rubber for the Cardinals in game three, and held the Lakers off for five innings before giving up an RBI triple in the sixth. Lauren Reichel came on in relief and allowed one of Kane's baserunners to score before retiring the side.
  • Abbie Begley brought in Concordia's lone run of the game with a third inning triple from her leadoff spot.
  • Carly Pearson secured two hits for the Cards, but ultimately Concordia fell to Roosevelt in the rubber match, 2-1.

 

Next up for the Cardinals is a weekend series at Brescia University where they will play four games in two days.
