Cardinals split WHAC series with Indiana Tech

(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia softball continued WHAC conference play with a home doubleheader against Indiana Tech on Friday afternoon.  The Cardinals entered the tilt 21-16 overall (9-3 WHAC) while the Warriors came in 13-19 overall (3-7 WHAC).  CUAA ground out a 7-5 win in game 1, but Indiana Tech claimed a 10-1 win in game 2 to split the series.

 

Game 1 – CUAA 7, IT 5

Lauren Reichel pitched in game 1, notching 5 strikeouts in 5 innings.  Reichel helped her own cause to open scoring in the 2nd, getting on base with a single and eventually scoring when Lauren Martin reached on a fielder's choice.

Indiana Tech tied the game in the 3rd and scored a run in the 4th and 5th to take a 3-1 lead.  The Cardinals surged back with 4 runs in the bottom of the 5thEmma Paryaski hit a single and a throwing error allowed Abbie Begley to score.  Lauren Reichel used an RBI single to score Carly PearsonEmma Paryaski then stole home on a double-steal with Reichel moving to second base.  Finally, Lauren Martin closed the inning with an RBI single to score Reichel for a 5-3 lead.

Cassidy Kane came in to pitch in the 6th inning.  Indiana Tech got a run back in the top of the 6th, but Concordia answered with 2 runs in the bottom half of the inning.  Kendall Kahl started things off by smashing a solo home run.  Lauren Reichel then hit an RBI single to score Hannah Sickmiller.

While the Warriors added a run in the 7th, Cassidy Kane finished the game off by inducing a groundout to claim the 7-5 win.

 

Game 2 – IT 10, CUAA 1 (5 innings)

Kendall Kahl started game 2 on the mound.  Indiana Tech scored a run in the 1st and 2nd innings to take an early 2-0 lead.

Indiana Tech broke the game open with 7 runs in the 3rd inning.  Kate Elias came in to pitch midway through the inning, securing the final strikeout to retire the side.

The Cardinals managed to break the shutout in the 4th inning when Kate Elias crushed a solo home run.  Concordia turned a double play in the top of the 5th, but the team was unable to mount a comeback in the bottom of the 5th and fell by the mercy rule.

 

Concordia will be back in action tomorrow on the road at UNOH.  The doubleheader starts at 1pm.
