Softball defeats Alice Lloyd 9-1 in first game of NCCAA World Series

(Easley, SC) – Concordia softball competed in pool play of the NCCAA World Series on Tuesday afternoon.  The Cardinals received the #2 seed in Pool B and faced off against #6 seed Alice Lloyd College in their first game.  CUAA surged to a quick lead and claimed a 9-1 victory after 5 innings due to the mercy rule.

 

Lauren Reichel started the game on the mound, posting 4 strikeouts in 4 innings.  Reichel struck out 2 batters in the top of the 1st and the Cardinals scored 2 runs in the bottom half of the inning.  Emma Paryaski hit an RBI double that dropped in left field to score Abbie Begley and Lauren Reichel hit an RBI single to score Paryaski.

 

Reichel made another 2 strikeouts in the 2nd and Concordia broke the game wide open with 7 runs in the bottom half.  Shannon McAlinden hit a 2-RBI bases-loaded single that drove in Sarah Tyrrell and Carly PearsonEmma Paryaski used an RBI single to score Koryn Playford, and both Paryaski and McAlinden reached home on an error.  Another Alice Lloyd error scored Megan Hinkle and Lauren Reichel to make it a 9-0 CUAA lead.

 

The Eagles broke the shutout with a run in the 3rd inning, but the Cardinals were able to prevent any runs after that.  Cassidy Kane finished out the top half of the 5th inning on the mound to keep CUAA ahead by 8 runs, triggering the mercy rule and the 9-1 win.

 

Concordia will now face #3 seed Carolina University at 10:00am tomorrow to complete pool play.  The team will play again tomorrow with the time depending on the results of the first game.
