WHAC announces softball awards; Reichel and Playford earn first team honors

( ) The Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) recently announced their season awards. Several Cardinals were honored for their success both on and off the field. Lauren Reichel and Koryn Playford highlighted the Cardinals honors being named to the all-conference team.

Reichel was among the WHAC leaders in several statistical categories. Reichel led the team and the WHAC in innings pitched with 144 and in total strikeouts with 153. She was second in the WHAC in average strikeouts per game with 7.40. In 23 starts she posted a record of 13-7 and threw 15 complete games with an ERA of 2.08. In the last week of the season, Reichel was named the WHAC player of the week and also earned NCCAA honors as well.

Sophomore standout Koryn Playford had a breakout year for the Cardinals. Playford posted a .383 batting average with 31 runs and a team high 21 stolen bases. Her 21 stolen bases ranked second most among the WHAC.

The Cardinals saw three on the second team. Shannon McAlinden, Abbie Begley, and Carly Pearson were recognized for the first time in their career on second team. Begley led the team in runs and hits with 34 and 66 respectively. McAlinden led the team in batting average with a .395 mark. She also posted a team best of .535 slugging percentage. McAlinden also led the team in RBIs with 33. Senior captain Carly Pearson showed her versatility for the Cardinals this season with 23 runs, 35 hits, and a team best 13 walks.

The WHAC honors athletes through the All-Academic team for those student-athletes of junior academic status having atleast a 3.25 cumulative GPA. Qualifying for the Cardinals this season were Megan Hinkle, Emma Paryaski, Lauren Reichel, and Natalie Shawl.

 

The WHAC prioritizes the NAIA's core values of respect, integrity, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership. In celebration of these core values the WHAC honors representatives from each sport that epitomize these core values and their respective institutions. The coaches also vote for a coach that represents these core values as well. Coach Cavanagh was voted by the WHAC coaches as this year's recipient. Heidi Walters was named Concordia's recipient of the Champions of Character.
