Kayla Peters named WHAC Newcomer of the Year and First Team All-Conference; other Cardinals recognized

The Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference announced their 2020-21 volleyball season awards on Thursday afternoon. Several Cardinals were honored for their success on and off the field.  Freshman standout Kayla Peters highlighted the Cardinals honors being named first team all-conference, newcomer of the year, and was also on the all-freshman team.

 

Peters has made an immediate impact for the Cardinals since stepping foot on campus in August. She's garnered the respect of opposing coaches in the WHAC leading to several accolades in her freshman campaign. Peters led the team ranked among the WHAC leaders in several statistical categories. As an outside hitter, Peters led the team and ranked 3rd overall in kills totaling 246. She led the team and ranked 4th overall in kills per set with 3.1. Peters showed her versatility defensively as well recording 305 total kigs which was second on the team and fifth overall in the WHAC. Since the 2005 season, Peters is the first Cardinal to be named the WHAC Newcomer of the Year.

 

Seven Cardinals were named to the WHAC All-Academic Team for their work in the classroom and maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.25. Emily Belinsky, Gabrielle den Boer, Nicole Evans, Hailey McCourt, Tara Schatzle, Kaitlin Veihl, and Natalie Waske were named to the all-academic team.  

 

Kaitlin Veihl was also recognized as the team's WHAC Champion of Character. The senior captain was honored for her commitment to the five core values of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership.
