WHAC Preview: Volleyball set to face Madonna in the WHAC Quarterfinals

(Livonia, MI) – The volleyball team has had a year unlike any other having to compete in a split season between the fall and the spring. The Cardinals persevered and made the most of the opportunities to compete when they were able. The Cardinals posted a 7-13 mark overall and 7-10 record in the competitive WHAC. The Cardinals have clinched their berth in the 2021 WHAC Tournament as the 6th seed. The Cardinals will make the short trip to Livonia as they will look to upset the third seeded Madonna Crusaders on Tuesday, April 7th, in their Quarterfinal matchup.

Scouting the Crusaders

Madonna finished the regular season with a 13-4 overall record, while going 11-4 in conference play. The Crusaders finished the season receiving votes in the final coaches' poll of the regular season. They have been nearly unstoppable on their home court where they have gone an impressive 6-1. In their winning efforts, Madonna has won 40 out of the 46 sets in total.

The Crusaders' attack is led by Jodie Kelly as she has 288 kills this season. Jordyn Dawson helps make this attack possible by complimenting Kelly with 367 assists, followed by Betsy Cook with 257 assists of her own.

Scouting the Cardinals

Concordia finished the regular season with a 7-13 overall record, while going 7-10 in conference. The Cardinals were 3-1 in the Fall with a sweep over Lawrence Tech and a home win over Rochester. The Cardinals have made great improvement throughout this season with Cook under the helm for her third season.

Kayla Peters leads the Cardinals attack with 241 kills and 344 assists. Hailey McCourt marks closely behind her counterpart with 341 assists of her own. Tara Schatzle leads the way with 390 digs on the defensive side of play for Concordia.

In Case You Missed It

The Cardinals and Crusaders squared off twice this season with both games occuring in the second half of the year. The Crusaders beat the Cardinals in straight sets both times. The first game took place on Feb 27 in Livonia with the Crusaders winning 25-22, 25-11, 25-20. Kayla Peters led the Cardinals with 15 kills and 11 digs.  Abigail Austin also recorded 17 assists and 11 digs. On March 23rd, the teams played the second match of the season with the Cardinals putting up a fight until the end ( 25-18, 25-17, 25-23). Tara Drinane and Kaitlin Veihl paced the Cardinals attack with 9 kills each. Tara Schatzle recorded 23 digs for the Cardinals.
