Volleyball fall 3-1 to Aquinas in WHAC matchup

(Grand Rapids, MI) – Concordia volleyball continued their season on Friday night when they traveled to Aquinas.  The Cardinals came in 3-3 overall while the Saints entered 7-1.  CUAA came out with a win in the first set, but Aquinas took the next three to win 3-1.

Kayla Peters led Concordia with 14 kills.  Tara Schatzle led the team with 25 digs.  Abigail Austin finished with a team-high 21 assists while adding 20 digs.

 

Set 1 – CUAA 25, AQ 23

Tara Drinane had the first kill for Concordia.  A pair of kills from Kayla Peters and one from Hailey McCourt helped to pace the Cardinals to a 6-3 lead.  The lead continued to change hands with Tara Drinane notching two straight CUAA kills.  The set went right down to the wire with a kill from Kaitlin Veihl tying the score 23-23.  McKenzie Peters finished off the set with two aces to claim a 25-23 win.

 

Set 2 – AQ 25, CUAA 21

Kayla Peters had a pair of kills in set 2 as the teams traded points again early.  Two kills from Hailey McCourt led to a 7-6 lead.  Aquinas pulled ahead 16-11 midway through the set and was able to maintain a 4-5 point lead throughout.  Tara Schatzle recorded an ace late in the set, but Aquinas took set two 25-21.

 

Set 3 – AQ 25, CUAA 20

Tara Drinane ended a 4-0 Aquinas run with a kill in set 3.  Concordia fought back to take a 6-5 lead after a kill and an ace from Kaitlin VeihlMadalyn Lisman had two kills as the third set was closely contested.  Kaitlin Veihl continued her strong play with more kills, but Aquinas pulled away to win set three 25-20.

 

Set 4 – AQ 25, CUAA 18

Tara Drinane had the first kill in set 4.  Drinane and Kaitlin Veihl combined for a block as the Cardinals kept the game close early on.  Concordia rattled off a 4-0 run to pull closer midway through the set, but despite three late kills from Kayla Peters the Saints finished the game with a 25-18 win.

 

Concordia will play their next game tomorrow at Trinity International starting at 1pm.
