Saints drop Cardinals in four sets, 3-1

(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia volleyball hosted rival Siena Heights on Tuesday night in WHAC conference play.  Prior to the game the Cardinals honored their five senior team members: Gabrielle den Boer, Hailey McCourt, Kaitlin Veihl, Nicole Evans, and Tara Schatzle.  CUAA claimed the win in set 1, but the Saints won the final three sets to claim the win.

Kayla Peters led Concordia with 12 kills. Senior Hailey McCourt had a team-high 19 assists.  Senior Tara Schatzle led the team with 23 digs.

 

Set 1 - CUAA 25, SHU 17

A block by senior Kaitlin Veihl gave Concordia an early 3-2 lead.  Madalyn Lisman had two early kills as the Cardinals jumped out to an early 8-4 lead.  After Siena Heights tied the game 9-9, Tara Drinane started a 4-0 run with a kill.  Kayla Peters made a powerful kill late in the set and an ace from senior Kaitlin Veihl clinched the 25-17 win in set 1.

 

Set 2 – SHU 25, CUAA 19

Kayla Peters had the first kill in set 2.  Kaitlin Veihl added an early ace as the second set was closely contested.  Kayla Peters continued to hammer kills for the Cardinals, but a 6-0 run put Siena Heights up 21-14.  While CUAA won a long volley late in the set with Kaitlin Veihl making the kill, SHU took set two 25-19.

 

Set 3 – SHU 25, CUAA 10

A combined block from Kayla Peters and Madalyn Lisman tied the game 3-3.  Kaitlin Veihl made a block that found an open spot for a 6-5 lead.  Siena Heights slowly began to pull away and despite kills from Abigail Austin and Madalyn Lisman the Cardinals fell 25-10 in set 3.

 

Set 4 – SHU 25, CUAA 18

Madalyn Lisman had the first kill in set 4.  The set was closely contested again early on with Kayla Peters and Kaitlin Veihl combining for a block and each notching kills.  Tara Drinane found an open spot to give the team a 9-8 lead. 

The Cardinals kept fighting with Hailey McCourt notching a late service ace.  The team battled to a 17-17 tie, but Siena Heights closed the set on an 8-1 run to win the match.

 

Concordia will remain at home on Wednesday, March 10 against No. 17 Bethel at 6:00pm.
