Leatherman's career high 41 points propels Cardinals past IU-East

(Richmond, IN) The Concordia Women's Basketball team returned to Indiana for the First Bank Richmond Tournament hosted by IU-East. Concordia faced off against the hosting Red Wolves Friday afternoon and won the game 81-69.

Taylor Leatherman led the Cardinals with a career high 41 points in the game. Samantha Dorn also put up double digits for Concordia with 18 points.

IU-East jumped out to a five-point lead early in the first quarter which the Cardinals were not able to even up until less than three minutes remained in the quarter. Julia Hirt drained a three and then Samantha Dorn and Taylor Leatherman took care of business at the free throw line to tie things up. Leatherman and Dorn both sank a shot to give the Cardinals a four-point advantage after one.

Ellie Kallner hit a pair of pull up midrange jumpers followed by three layups from Leatherman and Dorn each to grow the Cardinals lead in the second quarter. The Cardinal defense limited the Red Wolves to primarily shots from beyond the arc which helped Concordia maintain an eight-point lead at halftime.

Concordia opened the third quarter with a 10-2 run, increasing their advantage even more. A pair of defensive stops led to coast-to-coast baskets from Hirt and then Leatherman. IU-East sank a pair of triples to keep the game within the low double digits.

Izzy Viau scored a trio of buckets off of great ball movement from the Cardinals offense in the start of the fourth. A Leatherman three pointer at the shot clock buzzer followed by another Leatherman basket gave the Red Wolves no option but to intentionally foul the Cardinals for the remainder of the game. Kierslynn Lawless drew a charge on defense to put the game on ice and give the Cardinals a 12-point win.

The Cardinals will remain in Richmond for a matchup against the winner of Oakland City and Indiana Wesleyan tomorrow.
