(Grand Rapids, MI) – Concordia women's basketball traveled to Cornerstone on Tuesday night for a WHAC contest.  The Cardinals played tough and nearly erased a 14-point deficit, but the Golden Eagles emerged with a 71-64 win. 

Taylor Leatherman's double-double led the team with 14 points and 12 rebounds.  Asaria Turman finished second with 12 points.  Izzy Hadley had her first career game in double figures with 10 points. 

 

Samantha Dorn opened scoring with a layup off a feed from Izzy Viau.  Viau added two free throws and Taylor Leatherman dropped in a pair of early baskets.  Keirslynn Lawless scored through pressure and Julia Hirt knocked down a triple.  After a 13-13 tie, Asaria Turman scored inside after good ball movement by the Cardinals.  The game was tied 15-15 after the 1st. 

Taylor Leatherman had two early layups in the 2nd quarter.  The Cardinals looked to erase a deficit with Julia Hirt making a layup and two free throws and Zaria Mitchner hitting a triple.  Taylor Leatherman added two free throws and a basket, but CUAA trailed 32-30 at halftime. 

 

Izzy Hadley tied the game with two free throws and added a deep go-ahead jumper as the shot clock expired.  Monae Palmer banked in a shot and a deep 3-pointer from Emily McCalla tied the game 40-40. Asaria Turman scored in the paint, but the Golden Eagles used an 8-0 run to go ahead 51-42.  Zaria Mitchner had a pair of inside baskets down the stretch and CUAA trailed 54-46 after the 3rd. 

Asaria Turman made two free throws in the 4th, but the Cardinals' largest deficit came with Cornerstone leading 62-48 after a technical foul.  Turman began to pace a 10-1 run with two more free throws and two baskets in the paint.  Izzy Hadley drew an "and-1" after intercepting a Cornerstone pass to trim the deficit to 63-58. 

Samantha Dorn and Taylor Leatherman had late drives as the team tried to complete a comeback.  While Izzy Hadley reached double figures with 2 more free throws, Cornerstone held on for the 71-64 win. 

 

Concordia will return to action at home on Wednesday, November 30 when they host Lawrence Tech at 5:30pm.
