Women's Basketball pulls away late for 74-62 win over Cornerstone
 
 

(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia women's basketball hosted Cornerstone on Saturday afternoon in WHAC conference play.  After a closely contested game, the Cardinals pulled away late in the 4th quarter for a 74-62 win. 

 

Samantha Dorn led the team with 19 points.  Keirslynn Lawless finished second with 12 points.  Taylor Leatherman had a team-high 8 rebounds while tying Ellie Kallner and Emily McCalla with 9 points. 

 

 

Samantha Dorn made a layup to start a 7-0 run for the Cardinals.  Izzy Viau added a basket and Taylor Leatherman finished an "and-1".  Samantha Dorn converted a drive and a 3-pointer while Zaria Mitchner hit a jumper later on.  CUAA led 14-12 after the 1st. 

 

Cornerstone briefly took the lead in the 2nd, but Samantha Dorn tied the game with two free throws.  Emily McCalla scored a layup and Keirslynn Lawless made a putback.  McCalla converted an "and-1" and Lawless scored again after solid ball movement.  Izzy Viau nailed a triple from the corner and Asaria Turman scored inside, but the contest was tied 30-30 at halftime. 

 

Taylor Leatherman made a quick drive to start the 3rd.  Leatherman added a putback and Zaria Mitchner drove to the hoop.  Cornerstone retook the lead with a 7-0 run, but the Cardinals answered with a triple from Samantha Dorn and a go-ahead jumper from Zaria MitchnerKeirslynn Lawless scored inside later in the quarter, but Cornerstone fought back to lead 48-43 after the 3rd. 

 

Taylor Leatherman made a putback to start the 4thKeirslynn Lawless scored inside twice and Samantha Dorn knocked down a 3-pointer.  After trailing 58-52, Zaria Mitchner made a layup to start a 13-0 CUAA run that swung momentum.  Emily McCalla made a jumper and then Ellie Kallner caught fire with three straight triples to cap the run. 

 

Cornerstone trimmed the lead to 65-62 with 1:31 remaining.  Keirslynn Lawless scored inside to end the run and free throws from Emily McCalla, Samantha Dorn and Zaria Mitchner closed out the win. 

 

 

Concordia will play at Madonna this Wednesday at 5:30pm.
