Women's Basketball rallies late to down Siena Heights in regular season finale

(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia women's basketball hosted rival Siena Heights on Saturday afternoon to close out conference play. The Cardinals honored their four senior team members prior to the game: Asaria Turman, Keirslynn Lawless, Samantha Dorn, and Zaria Mitchner. CUAA overcame an early deficit by finally pulling away in the 4th quarter for a 68-62 victory.

 

Samantha Dorn led the team with 21 points. Emily McCalla finished second with 16 points. Taylor Leatherman had a team-high 12 rebounds along with 12 points. Keirslynn Lawless also finished in double figures with 10 points.

 

Asaria Turman opened scoring with a midrange jumper. After SHU answered with an 8-0 run, Zaria Mitchner scored off the high glass. Izzy Hadley added two free throws and Taylor Leatherman scored inside after a slick pass from Hadley. Samantha Dorn drove to the basket as well, but CUAA trailed 19-10 after the 1st.

 

 

Keirslynn Lawless made a layup to open the 2nd. SHU opened a double-digit lead but Samantha Dorn drained free throws and Emily McCalla finished an "and-1". Taylor Leatherman hit a triple and McCalla stayed hot with a layup and a 3-pointer. CUAA trailed just 31-25 at halftime.

 

Izzy Viau nailed a 3-pointer to start the 3rd. Keirslynn Lawless scored inside and Samantha Dorn continued the rally with a triple. Emily McCalla knocked down another 3-pointer and CUAA trailed 42-38 after the 3rd.

 

Keirslynn Lawless scored inside to open the 4th. Samantha Dorn and Lawless continued to keep the offense going and Emily McCalla drilled a triple and a layup. The Cardinals finally pulled in front 51-50 with free throws from Dorn at the 5:02 mark.

 

Taylor Leatherman hit a 3-pointer and Samantha Dorn scored the next 7 CUAA points. Dorn and Leatherman made critical free throws in the final minute to secure the 68-62 win.

 

 

Concordia will now host Cornerstone in the WHAC Tournament on Wednesday.
