Falk's overtime goal lifts Cardinals past Shawnee State 2-1

(Portsmouth, OH) – Concordia men's soccer continued their season with a night game against Shawnee State on Thursday evening. Both teams came into the contest looking for their first win of the season. The game required extra time to determine the winner, but an overtime goal from James Falk (SR/Garden City, MI) propelled the Cardinals to a 2-1 victory.

Concordia put early offensive pressure on Shawnee State and took an early lead when Anthony Tucker (SR/Canton, MI) scored his second goal of the season in the 12th minute. The Cardinals withstood several shots by Shawnee State late in the 1st half with Spencer Ward (SR/Rochester, MI) making one of his 3 saves in the game. CUAA led 1-0 at halftime.

Concordia maintained their lead through most of the 2nd half, weathering multiple corner kick opportunities from Shawnee State. However, the Bears were able to break through and tie the game in the 81st minute. The contest remained tied 1-1 after regulation.

James Falk would be the overtime hero for the Cardinals, scoring in the 96th minute off an assist from Boris Illic (JR/Clinton Township, MI). The goal secured a 2-1 victory for Concordia, giving the team their first win of the 2019 season.

The Cardinals will hold their home opener on Monday, September 2 when they host Missouri Baptist. The game is scheduled to start at 12pm.
