Late penalty kick lifts Wolverines past Cardinals, 3-2

(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia men's soccer continued WHAC conference play when they hosted UM-Dearborn on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals entered the game with a 3-8 overall record while the Wolverines came in 3-5 and 2-2 in WHAC conference play. CUAA outshot UM-Dearborn 17-9 and held a 2-1 lead after the 1st half, but the Wolverines came back to win 3-2.

Spencer Ward (SR/Rochester, MI) started in goal for Concordia, making 2 saves in the match. The Cardinals fired multiple shots early in the game, but UM-Dearborn struck first in the 27th minute to take a 1-0 lead. CUAA tied the game in the 34th minute when Tanguy Flachez (JR/Lyon, France) fired a blast from the right side past the goalie.

4 minutes later, Concordia took the lead when Steven Soboslay (SO/Chesterfield, MI) scored off an assist from Daniel Lynch (SR/Brampton, Ontario). Lynch passed the ball in from the left side of the net and Soboslay slid and tapped the ball in the goal. The Cardinals held a 2-1 lead at halftime.

UM-Dearborn attacked Concordia early in the 2nd half with multiple corner kicks. Jacob Campbell (SR/Macomb, MI) made a key defensive header save in the 65th minute, but the Wolverines were able to tie the game a minute later. The Cardinals appeared to have scored a go-ahead marker later in the half, but the goal was waved off due to offsides.

UM-Dearborn took a 3-2 lead off a penalty shot goal in the 85th minute. The Cardinals made several late pushes on offense, but the Wolverines hung on to hand CUAA the loss.

Concordia will head back on the road on Wednesday, October 16 when the team travels to Indiana Tech for a night game. The match is set to begin at 7pm.
