Men's soccer extends win streak with 2-1 victory over Lourdes

(Sylvania, OH) – Concordia men's soccer faced off against Lourdes on a drizzly Wednesday evening in WHAC conference play. Both teams came into the match tied for 9th place in the WHAC with identical 5-11 overall and 3-6 conference records. After a scoreless first half, a pair of goals from Steven Soboslay (SO/Chesterfield, MI) lifted the Cardinals to their third straight win with a 2-1 victory.

Spencer Ward (SR/Rochester, MI) started in goal for Concordia, notching 3 saves in the win. The Cardinals threatened early with 4 corner kicks in the first 9 minutes of the game. CUAA survived an offensive push by the Gray Wolves with Spencer Ward making 2 saves and the team recording a defensive save. The game remained scoreless at halftime.

Concordia's defense continued to hold strong after Lourdes received three corner kicks in the first 13 minutes of the second half. The Cardinals broke the tie in the 64th minute when Steven Soboslay scored a goal on a rebound off a Christian Margilaj (SO/Clinton Twp, MI) header. Soboslay capitalized on a turnover less than 2 minutes later with an unassisted goal to put CUAA ahead 2-0.

Lourdes cut the Concordia lead in half with a goal in the 70th minute. The Cardinals continued to press on offense with several corner kicks, and the defense was able to hold strong and secure the 2-1 victory.

Concordia improves to 6-11 overall and 4-6 in WHAC play. The Cardinals' final game of the regular season will be a critical match against Rochester on Saturday, November 2. While the Cardinals currently tie Aquinas with 12 points in the WHAC standings, the Saints hold the head-to-head tiebreaker for the #8 seed.

The game on Saturday will be played at Waterford Kettering High School at 11am.
