Softball splits in opening games of season

(Brighton, MI) - The Concordia Cardinals softball team opened up play today as they hosted the Legacy Tournament in Brighton, MI. Concordia ended the day by winning both games of the day over Grace College and Judson University.

Game 1: Concordia 11, Grace 0, 5 Innings

The Cards came out swinging in the bottom of the first inning as Koryn Playford singled and stole second base, before Shannon McAlinden tripled to right field and scored Playford. McAlinden would score on the next play as Maddie Grueter grounded out to the pitcher.

Following another quick inning from Hannah Duchene, the Cards would grab another two runs from the Lancers, CUAA would attempt to run a double steal and Sarah Tyrell would come home. Playford would strike with her second hit, this time being a home run over the wall in right field for the early 4-0 lead.

After a short third inning on both sides the Cards were able to put the nail in the coffin in the bottom of the fourth plating seven runs across the plate. McAlinden started the scoring once again with a liner into right field and was able to come all the way home on a fielding error. After a Grueter double and steal she came home on another attempted double steal. Tyrell hit a single to bring home Bella Lee. With the bases loaded, Playford walked, McAlinden singled to bring home two more and Playford stole third and came home on an error.

Kendall Kahl came into pitch for what would be the final inning and made quick work striking out the first two batters and getting a lineout to end the game in five innings.

Game 2: Concordia 2, Judson 3

Following the first game the Cardinals got right back out onto the field for game number 2 of the morning this time against Judson.

After a quick top of the first, Payton Lewis singled through the left side of the field and scored Abbie Begley on the play. Both sides would be quiet until the fourth inning.

Once again Lewis would strike, hitting her first home run of her career in the bottom half of the fourth inning. The Eagles would respond in the fifth inning, when they would tally three runs on a couple of singles and a double steal, putting the score at 3-2.

The Cards would attempt to mount a comeback in the sixth inning as Bella Lee recorded a triple to the right center wall, but would be called out on a close play at the plate on a sacrifice bunt.
