Softball splits the series against Aquinas as they close up regular season play

(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia softball closed out the regular season with a WHAC doubleheader against Aquinas on Saturday afternoon.  Aquinas held on for a 9-8 win in the first contest, but the Cardinals picked up a 1-0 shutout victory in game 2 to record the split.

 

Game 1 – AQ 9, CUAA 8

Paige Anderson started on the mound in game 1, going 4.1 innings.  Aquinas opened scoring with a 2-run homer in the 2nd, but the Cardinals countered with 2 runs in the bottom half.  Caitlin Traviglia scored while Maddy Greuter was stealing second base and Cassidy Kane hit an RBI single driving in Greuter.

Aquinas added 3 runs between the 3rd and 4th inning to go ahead.  Karley Kent hit an RBI double in the bottom of the 4th to score Bella Lee.

Aquinas hit a 2-run homer in the 5th to pull ahead 7-3.  Kate Elias came in to pitch in the 6th, making 2 strikeouts in 2 innings.

The Cardinals got 2 runs back in the 6th, starting with a solo home run from Maddy Greuter.  Lauren Rhodea added an RBI single to drive in Jada Stephenson.

Aquinas plated 2 runs in the 7th, but the Cardinals pulled within one run when Maddy Greuter went deep again with a 3-run homer.  However, the Saints secured the final groundout to close the game.

 

Game 2 – CUAA 1, AQ 0

Hannah Duchene pitched a complete game in the second contest, making 3 strikeouts.  The Cardinals scored first in the 3rd when Shannon McAlinden used an RBI bunt to score Caitlin Traviglia.

Hannah Duchene continued to dominate on the mound, taking a no-hitter into the 6th inning until Aquinas hit a single.

In the 7th inning, a critical throw from Payton Lewis to catcher Karley Kent prevented a tying run from scoring.  The Cardinals stranded 2 runners to complete the shutout win.
