Softball earns conference sweep over Cleary

 

(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia softball hosted Cleary for a WHAC doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.  The Cardinals came up with a clean sweep on the day, producing 17 runs with 9-2 and 8-2 victories.

 

Game 1 – CUAA 9, Cleary 2

Paige Anderson pitched a complete game in the first contest, notching 3 strikeouts.  Cleary struck first with a run in the 1st inning.

The Cardinals stormed back with a 5-run 2nd inning, starting with a solo home run from Dee CampbellBella Lee added a 2-RBI single that drove in Kennedy Cornette and Abbie Begley.  Lee eventually reached home on a passed ball and Shannon McAlinden capped the inning with an RBI single scoring Payton Lewis.

Concordia added a run in the 3rd inning when Abbie Begley reached home while Koryn Playford was attempting to steal a base.  In the 4th inning, Payton Lewis used an RBI bunt single to drive in Bella LeeDee Campbell added an RBI single to score Lewis.

Cleary got one run back in the 5th, but Shannon McAlinden countered with a solo home run in the 6thPaige Anderson retired all three batters in the 7th to secure the 9-2 victory.

 

Game 2 – CUAA 8, Cleary 2

Hannah Duchene pitched a complete game in the second match.  The pitcher started off the game strong allowing just one hit and no runs through the first five innings.

Dee Campbell opened scoring in the bottom of the 1st with a sacrifice fly to score Payton Lewis.

The Cardinals added a run in the 4th when Maddy Greuter crushed a solo home run.  Dee Campbell added her second RBI in the 5th with a groundout that drove in Payton Lewis.

Cleary broke the shutout with 2 runs in the 6th, but the Cardinals countered with 5 runs in the bottom of the inning.  Payton Lewis came up big with a grand slam, bringing home Morgan Scott, Caitlyn Traviglia, and Abbie BegleyShannon McAlinden then hit a triple reached home on a passed ball to cap the inning.

The Cardinal defense closed out the 7th inning with a double play on a lineout that went off of Maddy Greuter's glove to a diving Payton Lewis, clinching the 8-2 win.

 

Concordia will head on the road tomorrow at Indiana Tech for a doubleheader starting at 1 pm.
