Softball picks up the sweep against Trojans and Golden Bears

(Kissimmee, FL) - The Concordia University Softball team continued their stretch of games at The Spring Game down in Florida on Monday as they went up against the Hannibal-Lagrange Trojans and the West Virginia Tech Golden Bears. The Cardinals entered the day as 8-6, while the Trojans were 2-9 and the Golden Bears were 11-5. 

 

Game 1: Concordia 3, Hannibal-Lagrange 1

 

Hannah Duchene took to the mound looking to continue her hot pitching streak in Florida as she would yet again go the full seven innings. Duchene would only the one run on four hits. The defense played solid behind her as they did not commit an error. The defense was also able to turn two double plays. 

 

Both teams crossed the plate throughout the first inning. The Cardinals saw Shannon McAlinden and Sarah Tyrell get on base to start the game, and McAlindenwas able to come around to third on the Tyrell bunt. She would cross the plate in an attempt to steal home as the ball was dropped by the third baseman allowing her to score. The Trojans would score on an RBI single through the right side of the infield. 

 

Taking the lead right back in the second, the Cards would have Maddy Grueter double to deep center field and was able to advance to third on the play. She would come on after the catcher threw an errant throw down the left-field line. In the third inning, again the first two Cardinal batters would reach the plate safely as Payton Lewis and Tyrell would get on base. Kennedy Cornette would hit a single to right-center and score Tyrell, on the same play Lewis was thrown out at home. The score after three would be 3-1. 

 

Game 2: Concordia 4, West Virginia Tech  2

 

The second game began with Paige Anderson on the mound looking to pick up her third win of the season. Anderson picked up her second straight complete game followed by allowing two unearned runs on seven hits and striking out two batters.

 

The first inning saw much of the same action as the first game of the day as both teams scored a run. The Golden Bears would get a runner on base with a walk and would eventually cross the plate following an error. While the Cardinal's run came after Shannon McAlinden started off the inning with a double and would score on a Kennedy Cornette bunt single. 

 

Both teams would remain scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning as the Cardinals would tack on three runs to take a 4-1 lead. Morgan Scott began the inning with a single to right field. After Jada Stephenson came into pinch run, she would steal third after following a walk to Lauren Martin. Both Martin and Stephenson would score on a McAlinden single to right-center field, and advanced to second on the throw. Caitlyn Traviglia would run for McAlinden and score following an errant throw. The Golden Bears picked up a seventh-inning run on an errant throw.

 

The Cards return to play tomorrow morning as they will start play at 10 am against Indiana South Bend followed by a matchup against No. 12 Grand View around 12:15 pm.
