Softball pulls off the weekend sweep against the Eagles

(Pippa Passes, KY) - The Concordia Cardinals softball team took the field this weekend for four games and came away with a four game sweep against the Eagles of Alice Lloyd College. The Cardinals came into the games with a 1-2 record while the Eagles came in at 0-4.

 

Game 1: Concordia 11, Alice Lloyd 4 

 

Hannah Duchene got the starting nod for the Cardinals as she would go on to pitch four innings and earn the win in the game. She would give up two runs and strike out two as well. 

 

The Cards would jump out to a 4-2 lead in the first inning. Peyton Lewis would start the game with a double and would advance on a Shannon McAlinden single. Maddy Greuter would bring in the first run of the game on a single to left field. Abbey Begley would bring in the next run on a single to third, and would steal second base on the next pitch. The final two runs came from a Bella Lee ground out and a Kennedy Cornette single. 

 

Both teams would be quiet until the fourth as the Cards would pick up another four runs. Cornette would bring in her next run on another single. Three batters later Lewis would bring in three runs scoring two others and herself after a triple and scoring on an error by the outfielder. 

 

The fourth, fifth and seventh inning would see a run in each inning as Begley would bring in a run, Gruter hitting a sacrifice fly, and Begley hitting a fielder's choice to bring in the final Concordia run. 

 

Kennedy Kahl and Paige Anderson would pitch the final three innings as they would combine to allow one run on three hits. 

 

Game 2: Concordia 9, Alice Lloyd 5 

 

The second game saw Paige Anderson picking up her first complete game of the season allowing one earned run on five hits and striking out three. 

 

Again the Cards would strike first as they would outscore the Eagles 2-1. Abbie Begley would continue her solid day as she brought in both runs. The third inning would see Koryn Playford hit a double to left field to bring in another two Cardinal runs. In the fourth, four runs would come across to score. Shannon McAlinden, Maddy Grueter, Begley and Playford all would bring in runs on hits. 

 

After seeing three runs scored in the bottom of the fifth, The Cards would add two important insurance runs in the final inning. Peyton Lewis and McAlinden both brought in runs in the inning. 

 

Game 3: Concordia 13, Alice Lloyd 4 

 

Megan Martin was the pitcher to start in the circle for the Cardinals as she would continue on to go 4.2 innings allowing four unearned runs on three hits and three strikeouts. 

 

After Peyton Lewis tripled to start the game she would score on a passed ball for the sole run of the inning. In the third Maddy Grueter would grab her first home run of the season hitting one over the center field wall, bringing in Lewis. The fourth inning saw three runs scored Bella Lee, Kennedy Cornette and Lewis all brought in runs in the inning.  

 

A Lewis sacrifice bunt would score Morgan Scott in the sixth inning. An explosion of runs in the seventh, saw six runs cross the plate, Playford would hit another sacrifice bunt and score Grueter. Later in the inning, Bella Lee and Lewis would hit singles to bring in runs. While Kennedy Cornette brought one in with a triple. She would then score on a passed ball to close the inning. 

 

Paige Anderson and Cassidy Kane would combine to pitch 2.1 innings, allowing three hits and striking out 4 batters. 

 

Game 4: Concordia 11, Alice Lloyd 4 

 

Getting her second start of the weekend, Hannah Duchene pitched a complete game allowing one earned one and striking out two batters. 

 

The Eagles would strike first for the first time on the weekend in the second inning. Striking back right away through, the Cards would add four runs as Peyton Lewis doubled, Kennedy Cornette singled, Abbie Begley hit a sacrifice fly and Koryn Playford would also single. 

 

The next inning saw Duchene help her own cause hitting a two-run homer to left field. Dee Campbell would add a single and bring home another Cardinal run. Two bases loaded walks in the sixth would bring in runs for CUAA. The final Concordia runs came from Begley singling and scoring on a passed ball.

 

The Cards will head back onto the road next weekend and continue their play in Kentucky with four games against Brescia University with two games on Saturday and Sunday.
