No.8 Women's lacrosse defeat Indiana Tech 17-7 in season opener

(Fort Wayne, Ind.) The nationally ranked (#8) women's lacrosse team made their much anticipated season debut on Saturday afternoon. After several scheduling postponements and cancellations, the Cardinals finally were able to play their first game against Indiana Tech. The game was counted as a non-conference matchup. The Cardinals scored two minutes into the game and never looked back. The Cardinals cruised to a 17-7 win.

 

Greyson Papp recorded a career and team high five goals to lead the Cardinals attack. Alyssa Lundy, Madisyn Fox, Taylor Nesbitt, and Nicole Bordo also recorded at least two goals.  Cassandra contributed on three of the goals with three assists. Jennifer Miller recorded two assists to go along with a team high 10 draw controls. Amanda Archer earned the win between the pipes with 5 saves.

 

Greyson Papp put the Cardinals on the board first in the first two minutes of the game on a free position shot. Marianna Miller quickly made it 2-0 less than a minute later after a successful draw control by Jennifer Miller. Consecutive goals by Madisyn Fox and Jennifer Miller made it 4-0 with 18:55 left in the first half before the Warriors scored.

The Warriors answered with two quick goals to cut the deficit in half with 17:07 left in the first half.

 

Two more goals by Madisyn Fox and Greyson Papp extended the lead back to 7-2 before the Warriors added a goal with 8:32 left in the first half.

The Cardinals tacked on three more goals in the last 8 minutes of the half to make it 11-3 going into the intermission. Alyssa Lundy scored two of her three goals within 13 seconds of each other during the stretch.

The Cardinals remained aggressive scoring the first five goals of the second half (16-3). Nicole Bordo scored two goals during the stretch taking advantage of free position attempt opportunities.

The Cardinals limited their turnovers and controlled the possession or much of the second half cruising to their first win of the season.

 

Before resuming WHAC competition the Cardinals will square off against two top-ten opponents. The first comes on Saturday as the Cardinals will travel to Kentucky for a matchup against No. 7 Georgetown at 2pm. The week after the Cardinals will play No. 2 Cumberlands at Indiana Tech in a neutral site game.
