Cardinals rally falls short 16-11 to Siena Heights in WHAC semifinals

(Ann Arbor, MI) – After receiving a first-round bye as the regular season champions, Concordia women's lacrosse hosted rival Siena Heights in the second round of the WHAC tournament.  The Cardinals entered as the #1 overall seed while the Saints came in as the #4 seed.  After falling behind early CUAA looked to make a late comeback, but Siena Heights held on for a 16-11 win.

Alyssa Lundy and Greyson Papp each scored 3 goals in the game.  Madalyn Fields led the team with 6 draw controls and 5 ground balls.  Katie Snow led the team with 4 caused turnovers.

 

Amanda Archer started in goal, recording 7 saves.   Jennifer Miller won the opening faceoff, but Siena Heights took an early lead with three unanswered goals to open the game.  The Cardinals broke the shutout at the 21:14 mark when Nicole Bordo scored off a rebound from a Taylor Nesbitt free position shot.  Bordo added a second goal to cut the deficit to 1 goal, but the Saints countered with 2 more markers.

Madisyn Fox got on the scoreboard with Yasmin Saraiva-Meissner drawing the assist.  However, Siena Heights added two more goals and held on defense for the rest of the half.  CUAA trailed 7-3 at halftime.

 

Madalyn Fields won the opening draw of the second half.  Siena Heights continued to extend their lead with 5 unanswered goals, taking a 12-3 advantage with 19:10 left to play.  Alyssa Lundy broke the shutout to end the run off a solid pass from Cassandra Allard.  Lundy added a second marker as the teams continued to trade goals.

Greyson Papp scored to begin a 4-0 CUAA run as the team looked to mount a late comeback.  Madalyn Fields jammed in a rebound off an Alyssa Lundy shot and Papp added a second marker after curling in front of the net.  Cassandra Allard capped off the run using a spin move to score, cutting the deficit to 14-9.

After Siena Heights scored to break the run, Alyssa Lundy and Greyson Papp both completed their hat tricks to trim the deficit to 15-11.  However, Siena Heights was able to hold on and earned a 16-11 win as time expired.

The Cardinals will not wait to hear of their post season fate as the NAIA will announce the national tournament qualifier next week.
