No. 8 Cardinals complete upset over No. 6 LTU 17-15 to secure first WHAC regular season championship

(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia women's lacrosse hosted Lawrence Tech on Sunday afternoon for a top-10 WHAC conference matchup.  The #8 Cardinals came in 6-1 overall and 5-0 in the WHAC while the #6 Blue Devils entered 3-2 overall and 3-0 in the WHAC.  CUAA performed well on offense, building a solid lead and withstanding a late Lawrence Tech Run to earn the 17-15 win. The win secured the Cardinals first WHAC regular season championship in program history. It also clinched the top seed in the upcoming WHAC tournament. 

 

Alyssa Lundy led Concordia with 6 goals in the game.  Nicole Bordo finished second with 4 goals.  Madisyn Fox notched a hat trick with 3 goals.  Jennifer Miller had a team-high 7 draw controls.  Amanda Archer led the team with 7 ground balls while adding 7 saves.

 

Alyssa Lundy opened scoring just under 2 minutes into the game off a feed from Jennifer Miller.  Lawrence Tech tied the game 1-1 about a minute later, but Katie Snow put the Cardinals back ahead with a goal.  The Blue Devils countered with 2 unanswered goals to take a 3-2 lead at the 24:12 mark.

 

Concordia stormed back with a 5-0 run, started with a tally by Nicole Bordo on a free position shot.  Cassandra Allard scored her first goal of the game and Alyssa Lundy finished her hat trick with 2 free position goals.  Greyson Papp capped off the run to give CUAA a 7-3 advantage with 19:23 left in the half.

 

Lawrence Tech ended the run with a goal but Nicole Bordo scored her second marker of the game off an assist by Greyson Papp.  Both teams traded goals with Bordo finishing off her hat trick with Alyssa Lundy drawing the helper.

 

The Blue Devils tightened the game with a 3-0 run to trim Concordia's lead to 9-8.  Madisyn Fox countered with a goal, picking up a rebound off a missed free position shot and finding a seam.  The Cardinals closed the half on a 3-0 run with goals from Cassandra Allard, Alyssa Lundy, and Nicole Bordo.  CUAA held a 13-9 lead at halftime.

 

Alyssa Lundy opened the second half with her 5th goal of the game with Taylor Nesbitt notching the assist.  Madisyn Fox recorded her second marker and Lundy scored her 6th goal to extend Concordia's lead to 16-9 at the 26:06 mark.

 

The Cardinals had to survive a late run by Lawrence Tech as the Blue Devils would close the game on a 6-1 run.  Madisyn Fox completed her hat trick with 8:53 remaining, but the Concordia defense had to remain sharp until the final seconds.  CUAA withstood the run and secured the 17-15 victory as time expired.

 

Concordia will now await their opponent in the WHAC conference tournament. The tournament will begin on Tuesday with seeds 3-6 playing in the first round. Concordia received a bye as the top seed along with Aquinas as the second seed. The Cardinals will play the winner of #5 Indiana Tech and #4 Siena Heights in the semi-final round. Concordia will host the winner with the game scheduled to start at 2pm.
