Late rally falls short for women's soccer against Aquinas, 2-1

(Grand Rapids, MI) – Concordia women's soccer traveled to Aquinas on Saturday afternoon for a WHAC conference matchup. The Cardinals entered 6-6 overall and 3-3 in WHAC play while the Saints came in receiving votes with a 10-2-1 overall record and a 5-1 WHAC record. After falling behind 2-0 CUAA pulled within one when Samantha Golchuk (JR/Garden City, MI) scored her 10th goal of the year, but Aquinas claimed the 2-1 win.

Anna Roman (FR/Carleton, MI) started in goal for the Cardinals, making 11 saves in the contest. Olyvia Putnam (SR/Zeeland, MI) took the first shot on goal for Concordia in the 16th minute. Adrienne Woodruff (SR/Commerce Township, MI) also fired a shot on goal and Anna Roman made 6 saves in the half as both defenses held strong. The game remained tied 0-0 at halftime.

Aquinas broke the shutout with a goal in the 63rd minute to take a 1-0 lead. The Saints added a second marker in the 83rd minute, but the Cardinals responded just over 2 minutes later with a highlight-reel goal. Amay Ciszewski (SO/Byron, MI) made one of her signature somersault throw-ins, and Samantha Golchuk was able to head the ball in for a goal.

The Cardinals kept pushing with Samantha Golchuk taking another late shot on goal, but Aquinas was able to consistently clear the zone. The Saints held on to emerge with the 2-1 win.

Concordia will play their next game on Wednesday, September 23 when the team travels to Cleary. The game is set to begin at 7pm.
