Late goal lifts Saints over Cardinals 3-2

(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia women's soccer hosted Siena Heights in a WHAC rivalry game on Friday afternoon. The Cardinals came in 7-7 overall and 4-4 in the WHAC while the Saints entered 10-4-1 and 6-2 in conference play. CUAA rebounded from an early deficit to lead 2-1, but Siena Heights eventually came back to claim a 3-2 win.

Anna Roman (FR/Carleton, MI) started in goal for Concordia, making 7 saves in the game. Siena Heights scored an early marker just 36 seconds into the contest to take an early 1-0 lead. The Cardinals answered in the 16th minute on a goal by Megan Starkey (FR/Macomb, MI). Kiera Savage (FR/Canton, MI) tapped a ball to the left side of the field to Megan Schulz (SR/Farmington, MI), and Schulz picked up the assist by setting up Starkey on the right side who finished the play.

Concordia extended their lead in the 25th minute when Samantha Golchuk (JR/Garden City, MI) scored her 15th goal of the season with Megan Schulz once again drawing the assist. Golchuk sprinted by the defense and chipped the ball over the Saints' goalkeeper to put the Cardinals ahead. Anna Roman made 3 key saves in the last 6 minutes of the 1st half, and CUAA headed to the locker room with a 2-1 lead.

Anna Roman made another 2 saves early in the 2nd half, but a penalty kick goal by the Saints knotted the game up 2-2. Concordia continued to attack the net with Kendra Lewis (FR/Waterford, MI) taking a pair of shots on goal, and both Samantha Golchuk and Megan Starkey remained dangerous in the offensive zone. However, Siena Heights was able to take the lead with a goal in the 75th minute. While the Cardinals attempted to move the ball into Siena Heights territory late in the game, the Saints held on to secure the 3-2 win.

Concordia will play their next game on Wednesday, October 30 when the team celebrates Senior Day against Lourdes. The game is set to begin at 1pm.
