Women's Basketball tops Goshen 74-48 in season opener

(Fort Wayne, IN) – Concordia women's basketball took on Goshen in the first day of the Saint Francis Tournament to open their season. The Cardinals led after the first half and pulled away in the second to claim a 74-48 win.

Taylor Leatherman's double-double led the team with 27 points and 11 rebounds. Brooke Brauher was also in double figures with 10 points. Abby Long came in third with 9 points.

 

Taylor Leatherman opened scoring with a free throw. Alexx Braddock scored inside and Leatherman added two more free throws. Brooke Brauher nailed a 3-pointer and Taylor Leatherman continued her standout game with two more triples. Alexx Braddock hit a late jumper in the paint and CUAA led 16-10 after the 1st.

Goshen pulled within two points to start the 2nd quarter, but Taylor Leatherman and Ellery Baker counted with layups. Brooke Brauher hit a jumper and a triple and Alexx Braddock hit a floater and two free throws. Abby Long hit two free throws and Jess Andrew made a jumper as the game stayed within a few points. A 3-pointer from Taylor Leatherman put CUAA ahead 36-31 at halftime.

 

Taylor Leatherman continued to be on fire with the Cardinals' first 10 points in the 3rd quarter. Brooke Brauher and Hannah Vallier drove for layups and Abby Long drilled a triple. Jess Andrew hit a 3-pointer for a 56-42 CUAA lead after three quarters of play.

Abby Long knocked down two baskets to start the 4th quarter. Mckenzie Maciejewski hit a 3-pointer and Emily McCalla drove for a pair of layups. Taylor Leatherman hit yet another 3-pointer and the Cardinals emptied their bench with the game well in hand. Maren McCallister knocked down a late triple and CUAA claimed the 74-48 win as time expired.

 

Concordia will face the host school Saint Francis (IN) tomorrow at noon.
