Women's Basketball outlasts Madonna, 63-49

(Livonia, MI) – Concordia women's basketball went on the road to rival Madonna for a WHAC matchup on Wednesday evening. The Cardinals survived several large runs by the Crusaders and pulled away for a 63-49 win to move to 8-0 in WHAC play.

Taylor Leatherman led all scorers with 21 points and added a team-best 15 rebounds. Abby Long finished second with 17 points. Ellery Baker was third with 7 points.

 

Ellery Baker made a layup for Concordia's first points, starting an 11-0 run. Taylor Leatherman added a pair of baskets and Julia Hirt converted a layup. McKenzie Maciejewski finished off an "and-1" to cap the run and CUAA led 11-6 after the first quarter.

Ellery Baker scored inside to start the second quarter. Madonna used a 19-3 run to surge ahead, leading 25-16 with 4:35 remaining. Emily McCalla ended the run with a layup and Maren McCallister scored a runner to chip into the deficit. Abby Long made a pair of free throws and shook her defender for a 3-pointer. Maren McCallister drilled a late triple to tie the game 28-28 heading into halftime.

 

Madonna started the third quarter with a 6-0 run until Taylor Leatherman scored inside. Abby Long continued to shake up defenders with a triple and Jess Andrew drained a game-tying 3-pointer from the corner. Abby Long and Taylor Leatherman added baskets and Jess Andrew nailed another triple from the same spot. A 3-pointer from Leatherman put CUAA ahead 49-45 after the third quarter.

Taylor Leatherman and Abby Long combined for a 10-0 run in the fourth quarter to help Concordia pull away. The Cardinals clamped down defensively holding Madonna to just 4 points in the final frame. Ellery Baker had a late free throw and layup to help secure the 63-49 win.

 

Concordia will return home to host Cleary this Saturday at 1pm.
